Not really, it's just telling that at the same time the US guts spending on NASA that they are putting out soppy movies like this and Interstellar about America going into space.

Besides the budget for this movie is small potatoes compared to the budget and production of even preparing and testing for the Moon Landing :P

Obviously. NASA gets less funding, they make movies about people going into space so the next generation will want to go into space again, thus asking for increased funding on the space industry, national or private. It does make sense.

Also China is planing on going to the Moon so why is he reliant on NASA?

I mean the Soviets publically showed to the world what the space looked outside of earth during Yuri Gagarin's flight.

Fun Fact: I have no intention to see this movie, at least not in cinema, since the last three movies by Scott I went to see were downright terrible and I don't like Matt Damon much,, but I didn't start a new thread about "teh terribul americanz making movie I don't want to see !1!!1oneone". So how about you chill out and go watch a movie you like or something instead of trolling about things you didn't even watch? No, not really. Personally I used to really believe I'll get to see men land on Mars. And beyond that... who knows? I still hope for it, but it looks less real then ever. But I still hope. For Commander Sinclair. And Marilyn Monroe.

The movie is already out and Its based on a fantastic novel by Andy Weir and consequently is an amazing movie that everyone should go out and see in the theater if they can. At its core the story is about one man's refusal to give up no matter how dire the situation by trying to solve every problem with science (bitch!) that he comes across.

Matt Damon has to carry the majority of the film on his own and he does a superb job to keep the audience invested in his quest for survival. There is a lot of humor as well which you don't expect from these kind of movies since sci-fi like Interstellar for example though quite good, was a much dour affair in comparison. In short its definitely the best movie I have seen so far this year.

To me it seems like a declining nation getting teary-eyed and thinking about the "good old days" when they put a man on the moon. This is actually what gives Americans a giant pain in the bum to this day, the fact that a Russian (and a commie to boot) got into space first. That will be in the history books forever.

Not unless the budget cutbacks were made before 2011, when the book came out.

Also, to address your comment about not being able to afford to put a man on mars, putting someone there is easy. Getting him back is the hard part.

Nope, it would be propaganda if the movie was done by a government to popularize the idea of space travel.

When it's done by someone who wants to popularise space travel so that his government will do it, it's more like lobbying ;)

Why wouldn't an american dream about going to Mars, even if his country has more or less given up?

Not sure how it is in the movie but China's space program plays its role in the book.
