clarry: It's meant to be a light hearted hot take on the topic of the related thread and this whole "gog should filter out gamez i dont liek" thing it's going with.. but I'm also half serious about indie platformers.
I don't know if people really love platformers that much or whether it's just more like a rite of passage for aspiring developers to start with a platformer (it seems like an easy genre to start with and learn the basics of game development from). As you can probably tell by now, I don't exactly love the genre.. so whenever one releases, I sigh "oh yet another one of these?!" So I can sort of relate to the frustration some people have about frequently seeing games they care for.
And I totally agree that a lot of the indies (across all genres) just don't seem that good to me. But as always: one person's trash is someone else's treasure..
So yeah, curated or not, any store will carry games some people won't like, and I'd say it is within the store's interest to make it as easy as possible for people to find and buy the games they do actually enjoy. NSFW or indie platformer or any other game..
No easy solution there. Just as it's not easy to categorize indies as trash/not trash (it's very subjective), you can't also easily draw the line w.r.t. "nsfw" or "sexual content." For exampe, I find that Cyberpunk 2077 is oozing with "sexual content" as compared to some of the VNs in the NSFW sale, but somehow hiding CP2077 and The WItcher 3 from the front page with the proposed "porn filters" never seems like a popular proposition.
At the same time, I think people are just too fixated on the front page. I don't normally run around complaining about indie platformers! I can open the store catalog and use the tags & genre filters. They are not perfect but unlike the OP in the cousin thread claimed, filters do indeed exist and one can exclude the undesired tags or just include the desired ones. Unfortunately for you, there is no "trash" or "not_trash" tag :\
I still think community curation would be the best. GOGmixes were a good first step in that direction.. meh.
My take on this:
-Well, the good news -for you-** is at least platformers
doesnt have an entry on the main drop down menu...
neither on the genres filter... :)
-About the genres/tags/classification/taxonomy
Agreed, is not easy. But hey, other stores can
and the enthusiasts too!:
Just look the wonderful detailed job the pcgaming wiki does...
Or the Syn-Vapor database site: Incredible job. Really!
So, effort & money should not be an excuse to dont do it,
or worse, do it wrong (like this store half baked style!) <---IMO
Isn't part of the duties the business player called "store" has?
Or who's on charge for that?
(Not a new question, that hasn't found a clear answer...conveniently...)
Anyway, I'd love as well a clear/easy/exact classification too:
And I can rant not only about this store, but all the others too!
Heck... I've been doing it since River-Name took off! :)
...Have you seen its decline of filtering options,
its lack of clear relevant results,
...the inclussion of ads on its pages?!
Those early days of online shopping where everything was simple:
Easy interfaces, manageable list of results,
easy way to pay - no 2FA, no captchas, no verifications,
no redirections, no self authorizations!?... no javascript trash!
Those sweet days are totally gone... I'm affraid :(
Did I mention I avoid the front page here?
By a long list of reasons (you could catch some from this post already)
Enough Friday talking by now I guess
I'm still waiting for filters for Language voices
& a more detailed ones for multiplayer features
Not to mention this wild dream of mine of having
an -Ignore- button for vgames and avoid revisiting them mistakenly...
I dont know from where I get those weird ideas! :)
Please, have a nice weekend. And thanks for reading this!
**=I do like platformers! :)
