They're also giving the Ubisoft/Reflections Driver series a live action TV show.
I've never even heard of Binge, which is apparently a streaming service. I'm even less hopeful that it'll be halfway decent than if it'd been on one of the established services.

They seem to be multiplying like tribbles. The side effect of that we should expect pretty much every IP with any level of popularity to get an adaptation, as every streaming service is desperate for "original" content and established titles to draw in new subscribers.
But why?

What exactly can you get out from System Shock that (Ugh...)

Isn't another prequel series?

Anyone who has played Shock 1 recently will fully realize, that anyone who isn't The Hacker is pretty much a pile of giblets or a horrifying mutant. All you've got is a long series of audio logs. (About 36 minutes worth.)

At best, System Shock would make a fantastic OVA or small TV movie, unless whoever is making this is going to capitalize on the isolation but I HAVE DOUBTS.

List of streaming media services - Wikipedia

There are so many of these things now that there are actually two services called Binge. One is from Australia, with around 827k subscribers. Amusingly, they also have a System Shock in their library -- it's a 2017 documentary about the MP3 file format.

The relevant Binge will launch later this year, and curiously features a crossed-out "Subscription" on their homepage. It's slated to be streaming service focused on gaming entertainment. Will revisit them after launch if I remember, but my expectations are very low.

A bit more background on this from Deadline.
The choice of franchise is... interesting as System Shock's years of glory are long gone and even among today's gamers this name might not mean much (as in mainstream, before someone get outraged). It means either creator is huge fan or they're desperate for anything even slightly recognizable to get some attention but didn't have money for something more popular. But if they're doing Driver (really?) too and it's some second rate company it's probably the latter.

My bet is either prequel or, more likely, some random sci-fi thriller with big bad AI and few familiar names thrown in here and there. Judging by how basically any video game adaptation turned out.

It could be interesting. I'll withhold judgement until it's out.

The Deadline article talked about the "System Shock franchise", which might not mean System Shock 1 but could be something related to System Shock 2 or otherwise in the setting (sequel/side story).

If they base it mostly on System Shock 1, maybe they will change the setting so that it's not only audio logs anymore, and either a) there is a small group of multiple survivors, either initially or the hacker discovers some more, or b) the hacker is in contact with people on Earth, or c) there are lots of flashbacks to life on the station before?

Obviously that would strongly change the feel of the series from the games, but maybe it could be tolerable if done well.

Or it could be a complete butchering, like the Avatar: The Last Airbender or Dragon Ball live action movies.
Why are the videogaming gods first then the fiction one so against this IP?
Is it cursed by any chance?

First the game's rights stuck in a legal mess for 20 years.
Then Night Dive Studio come to save the day and remake the beloved classic which turns in 1.5$M donated by backers sublimated into air, a couple of demos of the same level and countless concept art of doors.

Now the announcement of a TV show that would make me ecstatic it it wasn't for the record os mishaps this IP is tied to.

To be honest I always thought a TV show would suit better the narration of the events of the citadel which in a single movie might be forcefully crampend into.

This is the guy that will be directing the mini serie according to IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3859643/
He's made the screenplay for Mortal Kombat, why that doesn't make me feel any beter?

Here's his tweet, there's a nice photo of him staring at the nothing wearing a cardigan: https://twitter.com/WriterRusso/status/1486731425080512515?s=20&t=mr6uNeFN2xJy1oKfOlyKEg

Night Dive Studios are involved! Good, very good, it gets better by the minute.

Jokes aside I just wish the best to the guy so that he can make a good job (better than what we've seen up until now hopefully)

That's probably a far more realistic prediction. :-) The problem is these all end up the same : They take a 20hr game and in order to fit the movie / TV format they remove all the "boring parts" and focus on the action / drama. In reality, it's often some of those quiet lonely periods (that make boring TV shows) that add more to the ambience of a video game that's supposed to be in an abandoned setting than the actual action sequences. Wandering around alone in Rapture or SOMA springs to mind of being alone in an abandoned undersea facility. Likewise, if there's only around 36mins of audio logs, then to pad that out they'll add 900% more "drama" which usually involves extreme ret-conning of characters, etc.

"System Shock 90210" coming soon! It's just another sad example of the creativity brain-drain that Hollywood / TV studios cannot come up with a single original idea between them anymore without trying to constantly cling to remaking / reinventing 1960s-1990s IP every 5 minutes...
Please, just... stop....
