I own that game on Steam, and I'm kicking myself for not re-purchasing it on GoG (like I've done with some others to free them from that service) when I had the chance, because now the forced update to the new remastered version wrecked my game.

I would purchase that right now, x2 (My niece wants it, but there's no way the new one is going to run on her system)

That was a beautiful game that didn't even need this remaster, it was like having a million beautiful paintings with every footstep, every angle of view. Adding more complexity, high res textures and post processing doesn't always make things look better.

The remaster looks nicer in some ways, but actually worse in others. For one example, take a look at the trees, walk up close to them. The branches are more planar than they used to be, that's stupid. OK, it's not the main focus of the game obviously, but walking in the woods was one of the most pleasing aspects of this game for me and things like that matter.

Also, the console is gone and I can no longer toggle god mode and spawn objects. That WRECKS this game for me. I know it's still possible, because god mode attributes are still in my saved game state after the saves were converted.. I just can't start another game. Spare me the admonishments, I'd have never gotten past the first few chapters in any of these witcher games without cheats and I'd have never bought more of them. I HATE that kind of combat and just want to get through it to enjoy the story and world. Why shouldn't I be able to? (Or would you prefer that only teenage pimple wizards buy your games?)

People play games for different reasons. If I buy a game and I can't finish it, I'll never buy another from that developer, and maybe even that publisher for selling non-completable crap. This is why you need to have cheats or a super "easy" mode of play.

I want my game back. I'm willing to pay for it again to get it.

The original version is available as an extra if you buy TW3 on GOG.
Oh really? Thanks, I'll do just that. I wasn't aware.

Can you not roll back to the older GOTY Edition on Steam? I think that's a thing (though I don't know about in this particular case)..
No, I don't think you can roll back like that on Steam. I think I recall there being a hidden way to revert the last update to a game, but it's a temporary solution.

I'm happy with the solution presented to me here, I don't even mind paying full price for the remaster to get The Witcher 3 GOTY Classic back again. I'm downloading (and will be preserving) the Classic installer archives now. Had I known that was included, I wouldn't have even made this post, I'd have just bought it.

The Witcher 3 is one of my most comforting games.

You can revert to the old Witcher 3 Steam version by selecting "version 1.32" in the beta branch, just like you can go back to the old Resident Evil 2,3 and 7 games before the RT update.

Oh, well, that I was certainly unaware of, thanks for that advice.

I'm happier to actually have this standalone GoG edition of the "GOTY Classic" that comes with everything I need to play the game. I'm finding Steam to be more encumbering these days. (I'm a Linux user, by the way... I run this stuff with Wine)

I'll caution anyone else that this probably won't load any old saves that you'd likely have anywhere. I am having to start from scratch as even going back to 2019 are not compatible. That's fine, but wasn't what I was expecting.

Worth it! (and I'll use the Next Gen remaster again some day)
