First games, then movies, now TV shows.

Steam has decided to diversify even more and grow bigger.

That was surprising.
NA only I guess, good show at least :)
Regionally-locked. Probably available only for US, Canada and maybe UK.

Not available in UK

Good for them, I guess.

Is there similar crying among Steam users that Steam should completely concentrate on games and not diversify, like there was on GOG when they introduced movies?
It appears to be available in Canada, unless something cock-blocks it at purchase time. I suppose it is cool for some folks to have another option for how to access such content. Not my cup of tea though, as I prefer to have downloadable copies of video in formats that are widely usable on many devices etc. rather than streaming video locked into a specific platform+software.

I think it'll take a while but Valve will carve a niche out of it unlike GOG's attempt (sadly).
They're getting so big now I almost feel disgusted to have steam installed on my PC's. By disgusted, I'm disgusted in its interface being so bloated. Could be me using GOG a lot more often recently and used to its minimalist interface. If PC gaming community didnt try to break every last DRM all the time and AAA's trusted DRM free I'd leave valve kinda fast. The sales are mediocre, steam bundle sites have a good bundle here and there but theres a lot of bundles populated with crap.

Also I wouldn't be surprised if steam direct doesn't really solve much, they'll just charge 1000 dollars or something to publish a game and let in who ever puts up the money. Fairly new to GOG but I noticed CD projekt red under their game publishing rules actually filter and seriously look at games before approving instead of just charging money upfront.

Valve is greedy and lazy and throwing tv shows into their system shows more of it.

TLDR:

Valve saved PC gaming from ruin caused by pirates, pirates created a monster

CD projekt red returned PC gaming to its glory, but it can't stop a monster

CD Projekt Red has nothing to do with GOG. CD Projekt Red are the development studio, they have zero say in how GOG is run.

Also, I fail to see how Valve offering more goods makes them lazy and greedy. Are GOG also greedy and lazy by selling movies themselves? I'll bet you money if GOG was offered the deal to sell big TV Shows you'd see them here in a flash. GOG has been mimicking Steam's decisions for years now.

silent49: Valve saved PC gaming
PC gaming ever needed saving?
How can you save something that doesn't need saving?

It's precisely why I feel Valve's position is unwarranted and they're in the wrong place. And they're going to add TV shows now, I wonder how long will it be till it's Internet Explorer vs. the courts all over again but with Steam in its place.
US only? Screw that. Might as well use Netflix.

Even Adult Swim lets you watch their shows for free in their Streaming site even if you are not from US.
well .... dunno :D - for me it's a non-needed feature for sure ^^

You're aware you can minimalize Steam? You can put it in Small Mode and it basically becomes a library manager.
Also I wouldn't be surprised if steam direct doesn't really solve much, they'll just charge 1000 dollars or something to publish a game and let in who ever puts up the money.
This is not what it's trying to solve, they're just trying to filter out the incredibly low effort games that aren't even likely to sell a minimum amount by making them put up an investment that requires sales to earn get it back. Currently developers could dump tons of low effort games to try and get lightning to strike with one of them for just a one time $100 fee. Now it'll require $100+ *per* game, which will make hopefully make developers think harder before they put another game on Steam that isn't likely to succeed. They should probably do something about Steam cards as well, maybe not allow that to begin until till the fee is earned back (so same requirement per game)

What? Then who runs GOG?
