timppu: Which (if any) of those handheld "gaming PCs" have user-replaceable batteries? Preferably using common batteries that you don't have to buy from the device manufacturer overprices, but from generic battery stores (third-party batteries)?

I like how e.g. 8bitdo designed their wireless gamepads: the user can easily remove and replace the battery, and even use generic batteries instead, if needed. Yes yes, I know those handhelds use much more power so using generic batteries is probably not an option, but still, the ability to replace the batteries, at least so that they are not glued to the system or some weird shit like that, Apple-style.
Since the EU enforces the "right for repair" more and more, even Apple is starting to give in.
I don't know about the Steam Deck, but I saw the Asus ROG open and its architecture look quite modular. I assume that Valve also doesn't overcomplicate things.
Chinese products are usually not complicated to repair, so you should be good wih Aya and GPD.

But if you don't want to preorder anyhting, it's always good to check some hardware modder tech forums.

chriss545: done that

Trooper1270: What part have you done ?. The factory reset, the re-imaging or both ?.
both

chriss545: I am now regretting that i should have waited for the Asus ROG Ally which seems far better than this

Pheace: Is it crashproof?

Perhaps it's a little too early to say when it isn't even out yet. Plenty of things break after people actually start getting them in hand en masse and start doing tons of unexpected things.

Can you not return it under warranty, for a working replacement or even a refund ?.

Return Merchandise Authorization, that's the process for making use of the warranty.

chriss545: I have been facing the same issue like its the third time and whenever I update my deck it just gets crashed and its really frustrating for me as i waited months for my Steam Deck and and now this is happening

so kindly help mee as soon as possiblee
If you don't mind losing all your data, you may want to get a USB stick with a USB C adapter and then reinstall the OS.
I probably can't post any links, so search "Steam Deck Recovery Instructions" and go with the Valve result.

neumi5694: I'm waiting for the Aya Neo Slide, which has about the same tech specs as the Asus ROG, but the sticks seem to be higher quality than those of Steam Deck and Asus ROG. Like the GPD Win 4 it has a full keyboard under the screen. Additionally the screen can be tilted up (45° I think), so you can lay the handheld on the table and play mouse games or type.

Pheace: The inbuilt keyboard seems nice but I wouldn't want to be without trackpads on a handheld I think. It seems the Aye Neo Next II is going to have those. No backtriggers either. Lots of models coming out, sheesh. Good to see though, everyone can find their own device that suits their own purposes best.
I have a GPD Win4 and it's great. My Steam Deck is collecting dust now. Having a keyboard is a massive relief and it also has a small trackpoint on the right side too. It has two back buttons.

Featureset overall looks nice. Instantly reminded me of a PSP which is a pro imo. That said, seems support is pretty bad and it is very expensive and despite it's stats being almost 1.5-2x stronger than Steamdeck on paper it seems it only runs ~10-20% or so stronger in games. At least it fits in your pocket, which is never going to happen with the Steamdeck... though I think I'd scratch that thing up in no time if I did that.

Is there an instant rest mode of some sorts or do you have to rely on windows sleep mode for pause/continue a game? Read it was an issue for windows based handhelds but maybe there's a custom OS or something.

Re-image is to wipe the drive and install SteamOS in its original state.

RMA is Return Material Authorization (or Return Merchandise Authorization) You contact Valve support, go through troubleshooting steps with them, and if you can't fix it with their help, they will issue you an RMA, and either repair or replace it. Follow the RMA instructions on the Steam support site.

Well, Aya is also working on their own Linux build, so in the future you can probably chose.

Any kind of suspension would have to be done by the OS not hardware. There's one problem though. Everyone is aware of sleep, but hardly anyone is aware of hibernation. Those terms are not interchangeable. Sleep keeps RAM alive and it still uses power. Hibernation dumps ram into storage and shuts down. This is pretty much what all those consoles, including the Steam Deck do. Go to Control Panel, Power Settings and enable Hibernation, then assign it to the power button. Microsoft keeps hibernation hidden for whatever dumb reason, which only helps Valve. Now hibernation on linux tends to be more stable, but it would be a lie to say that you cannot suspend games on Windows either. I did have a few games freeze after coming out of hibernation, but most do come out fine. I'd recommend pausing (Start/Esc) them, before hibernating though.

That's how I got over 100 hours in Hellblade on GOG, despite it only being an 8 hour game at most. I hibernated my handheld and resumed it several days later. Galaxy counted the entire time from launch to quitting lol.
It IS possible of course - at least in modern games. Consoles manage to do that just fine and they have no magic hard- or software that works very differently from ours.
Galaxy/Steam or whatever other launcher is used would get the info from the operating system and react accordingly. But someone has to implement these functions. And so far there just was no demand for it.

In theory, freezing games should not happen anymore, now that direct hardware access is prohibited. But there's always enough opportunities to mess something up.

Thanks guys, sorry for the late feedback, but I fixed it by giving up on all of my data, anyways got my steam deck fine
