Hikage1983: Does the Treasure Trove include Specter of Torment? Also when exactly does the discount expire? Thanks :)
avatar
DreamedArtist: it includes everything. full package. not sure but I think 22nd? give it a shot it's worth it and consider Shantae series as well, it's freaking amazing!
Thanks for the info and do not worry. I already own and have finished every Shantae entry including the GBC original (via 3DS VC). They sure as hell are amazing and i can't wait for the already announced 5th game! :)
I got this full price a couple months ago and it was worth it. Paying 50% is a steal.
Okay, this game is well beloved and I don't get it. Why does everybody like this game?
This is a serious question (no trolling, I promise), even after watching gameplay videos all I can see is yet another 'jump and run'. What makes this title so special?
Thanks in advance!

It plays on nostalgia. They have borrowed elements from tons of old beloved franchises so that people will associate their favorite childhood game(s) with Shovel Knight.

That, and they made Shovel Knight feel like you remembered those games - not how they actually do play.

Ah, so that's it. Thanks! :)
Never was that into jump and run games, with a few exceptions. Guess I'm missing the rose tinted glasses.

Not to mention that they integrate some more recent developments (the "drop XXX if you die" mechanic of Darksouls, the multiple campaigns, the bragging rights bonus stages). The fact that early adopters essentially get three free games (the different campaigns play rather differently, after all) with their initial purchase isn't bad for their reputation either. Think of how Hollow Knight released only free DLC, and so the Kickstarter for Silksong is full of people saying that they regret not paying more the first time around.

Thanks for the info, didn't know about that.
Great hell of a deal; i have it on my 3DS and crossbuy PS4/vita and still tempted for this... Haha
Yacht Club Games: "All future DLC for Shovel Knight WILL BE FREE!"

Also Yacht Club Games: "We're jacking the price of Shovel Knight up to compensate for all the DLC we've added."

It's an interesting mix. There are also shops, minigames, etc. that I don't remember seeing in run and jumps from the 80s and 90s. They also mix in collectathon and RPG aspects as well (music sheets, coins, special items you can use whenever you want, magic meters).

To be fair, this seems to be the first time they've done it since they decided to sell Treasure Trove instead of have Shovel Knight and its DLC as stand-alone games. I hear that the new update - or at least a future one - will also include a Super Smash Bros.-style multiplayer mode, aside from the King Knight campaign, so there's still some content in the pipeline.

Shovel Knight launched at 15 dollars back in 2014. When they did the Treasure Trove update, they increased the price to 25 dollars. Now that the final piece of DLC is coming out, they're going to increase the price to 40 dollars. The DLC is only free for early adopters, everyone else is paying for the DLC as part of the base cost for the game. It's the Standard/Silver/Gold edition nonsense that's infected modern games, only without a Standard or Silver edition for people who want to save some money.
Shovel Knight is basically an amalgam of such NES classics as Duck Tales, Castlevania and Mega Man. Very much worth playing if you grew up during that era.

Magic meters and similar mechanics have appeared in platformers of this sort even back in the NES era.
* Castlevania has hearts, which function as your subweapon ammo.
* Ninja Gaiden has ninpo, which works like Castlevania's hearts.
* Mega Man has weapon energy; the difference here is each weapon having separate energy and the meter starting full (instead of almost empty like in the other two examples here).

Also, 2d platformers with shops include Kid Icarus and Battle of Olympus, not to mention Ys 3: Wanderers of Ys.

Don't forget the Super Mario Bros. 3 style world map.

Except I didn't identify the magic meter as something I hadn't seen in platformers. Good points about the shops, though. I never played any of those growing up, but I guess it wasn't all that unprecedented after all.
