Breja: there are people here who lost hundreds, if not thousands of rep points just because they pissed of some trolls and scammers
I didn't know the new nickname of this side's/site's SJWs and Faz got to be "trolls and scammers", but somehow, it is very fitting...

phaolo: No seriously, the reputation system sadly lost its meaning ages ago, because Gog didn't fight its abuse by shady users.
GOG fight rep abusers? GOG even granted those shady users' their demands for strict moderation EVEN AFTER THEM BLACKMAILING GOG (to stop buying games and convince others, even nowcomers/outsiders not to, unless gog made the forums snowflake-friendly), what do you mean by gog didn't fight them? You know, this type of creeps who keep posts screenshotted & bookmarked, log in together during certain hours and downvote en masse. Too bad i didn't pick up on stinking habits like theirs, or else i would show up some juicy evidence as well, on their "toxic forums" nagging and bitchy bark... I mean, blackmailing.

DarkDew: hi guys, i'm relatively new in the community, i was wondering how to get the reputation? and if it works for something else? besides the obvious.
You gain rep by making posts, getting +1s on your posts, and being marked as the answer on question threads. However, I, along with pretty much everybody else here, would recommend you just ignore it altogether. It's been horribly, horribly abused both ways ever since its inception, and has lost pretty much all meaning it once, if ever, carried. People will judge you by your posting history/what they know of you and nothing else.
It doesn't work for anything at all. You get stars next to your name for hitting certain marks, but that's about it. It doesn't even earn you prestige, because of the aforementioned scamming issue. There are sometimes giveaways which will ask for a particular rep requirement, but these are few and far between and the hosts are often mildly given the stinkeye for it unless they're willing to make exceptions for those who lost rep unjustfully.

Breja: Basically - ignore it. If ever it had any meaning, it has been long lost. The system is easily exploited, and there are people here who lost hundreds, if not thousands of rep points just because they pissed of some trolls and scammers. It's not as ba now, but still it's a poor indication of anything.
Thank you all for your answers, anyway it is not that i am interested in having a good reputation, that is to say, i am not one who judges for it, it is a matter of knowing the people. Anyway, i just thought that i could win something for the profile. (a stupidity)

once again, thank you all, it is clear to me. c:
Ahhh funk it. I missed my entry.
Rep is love, rep is life!

You might think buying games is the main reason for people to come to this site, but no siree, you'd be mightily mistaken! The real reason to visit this site is to watch that rep number grow, increase in size with every day, with every upvote, earning you precious stars.

To use an analogy: rep points are very much like the size of a man's penis. Sure, there are those who will tell you that size doesn't matter. Well, those people are wrong! They're either delusional or trying not to hurt anyone's feelings. So, here's the truth: Having a shrivelled, shrunken micropenis will give neither you nor your significant other the pleasure you both crave for. Size matters!

So go forth and earn yourself some rep points, Romeo! The chicks will dig it!

this place sells games?
It is something to think about. I'm fairly new here and a lot of people have 1k or more reputation. I keep thinking all the things they done to gain that. Maybe they've made 1k posts in 1k days or answered 100 questions. I know people like Adaliabooks, Barefoot Monkey and Zeogold have made posts that earn them a positive reputation. That could be a difficult thing to do and/or maintain.

Because those posts involve giveaways for which you have to maintain lists, scripts for which you have to program or writing a guide which you have to constantly update.

There are other ways but they are far from easy. So you really have to decide whether all that is worth it for you or whether you rather do something else, like play video games.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with checking this forum everyday for questions, trying to see whether you could help people out somehow or even just posting everyday. This forum is still one of the best on the web and better than Steam. Hell, they'll help you out with pretty much anything just as long you try to be nice.
