How to restrain your dragon.

Drakkhen is now available DRM-free, on GOG.com.
On a faraway island, the dragon lords stir from their slumber. If their foretold rise to power comes to pass, the age of man will come to an end, eclipsed by the winged reptiles of old. At the emperor's behest, four heroes set forth to cancel the apocalypse, traveling through 3D vector landscapes, solving devious puzzles, and fighting terrible, pixelated enemies in real-time. Prepare yourselves, heroes, for this ancient enemy is far from toothless.

It looks like Amiga or FM Towns. More colors than I remember.
I wish it was Drakan, but Drakkhen is not bad either. Bought without hesitation.

Going by the screenshots, I think this is the FM Towns version.

It runs in Dosbox 0.74 on Windows. You can run the game in EGA or VGA. The version you probably remember is the EGA version. VGA on IBM PCs arrived in 1987 - long enough for this game to take advantage of it. Graphics are on par with the Amiga version in VGA mode.

I prefer the 16 color EGA/Tandy version. Usually I purchase them and then copy them to disk to play on my Tandy 1000 HX. That's why I ask.
Holy $%#@~!

Talk about a GOG...

I still have my copy of this on my image of my old C drive from my 386 I had back in the early to mid 90s, but it's great to see it here.
Interesting that this is 4.99 instead of 5.99. My OCD dislikes the inconsistency ("old games are supposed to be 5.99!"). :P, but I'm sure if I actually wanted the game I'd appreciate the dollar savings.
Great addition. Fantastic game. Well, ok not FANTASTIC, but it was good and a very fun experience.

guppy44: That bundle burned me big time. I purchased those games for over $100 about 3 1/2 weeks before that bundle released. I still bought the bundle just to make giveaways and share the retro love, though. :D

That said, I'm still insta-buying this. I will support retros here until the day I die! :D

nightcraw1er.488: They are drm free on steam also? Why would pay twice for exactly the same product, that's mad or you have too much money. Not that I am saying go and buy it on steam, I wouldn't, what I am saying is that gog want to be steam then it's only fair to compare their prices. Use galaxy or steam client or steam command line or gogrepo, it's all the same just costs you 800% more, not the hardest of decisions.
You talk about price comparisons between Steam and GOG but use the price at Fanatical. On Steam, Drakkhen is $4.99. Currently it's $3.99 during their Summer sale. So during the sale it's cost 20% more here than on Steam.

I see your point, but then the 'real' Steam vs GOG price war would commence.

Nice that it's here for those who want it DRM-free, but is it really necessary to devote an entire release day to it? Games this old are very niche, and the Steam version is approximately $0.05 - it's part of a 21-game bundle for $1. Couldn't you release those games in batches? And offer somewhat comparable bundles? Even $1 per game - 20 times the Steam price - would have been acceptable.

I'm going to hold my hands up here too and echo the sentiment that this release is a good few days too late for most people interested, given that many of us already bought the Fanatical bundle. Even disregarding the fact that the Steam version is technically DRM-free (it's just the DOS version bundled with DOSBox, like the GOG release), it's hard to ignore the fact that Fanatical's $1 bundle contains 20 over retro games that mostly aren't here, all of which are also run through DOSBox.

That being said, now that GOG has Piko Interactive back on board (who apparently recently acquired the rights to distribute Ocean's and Infogrames' back catalogue, excluding I guess Ocean's famous-infamous film adaptations, but apparently including the Exxos back catalogue), GOG has a chance to bring out some of Ocean's less PC-centric titles, including Battle Command, Epic, F-29 Retaliator, Wizball & Wizkid as well as Exxos' Blood tri-quadrilogy (Captain Blood, Commander Blood, Big Bug Bang, which I'm working on a translation for, and also the unofficial "spin-off" Purple Saturn Day).

And on that note, maybe it's time for GOG to start working with Cloanto to distribute Amiga games with legal Kickstart ROMs. Why settle for the poor DOS conversions of games like Wizkid and Battle Command when you can have the superb Amiga originals?

GOG is supposed to be the flagship store for retro games, but they've really dropped the ball of late and let themselves be outclassed and outgunned by the likes of Night Dive and Piko Interactive.

timppu: Ok so answering to myself, apparently the PC version has Adlib sound card support. At least we don't have to put up with PC beeper sounds then, but I am sure the Amiga version still sounds better as this doesn't apparently have Roland MT-32 support.
I've never seen a multiplatform game from the 80s through early 90s that wasn't better on the Amiga than on DOS/IBM. I wish GOG would gain the ability to offer Amiga versions for all applicable games in its catalog, especially the SSI Gold Box ones, which had more colors, more pixels, and digital sound on the Amiga.
The updated version of the old box art, used as the background on the Drakkhen page and the game thumbnail, looks awesome! That was made by a GOG artist, right? I don't think I've seen it anywhere else. In any case, beautiful work, really well done, love it! :)
