I've volunteered at homeless shelters and food banks, not just at Christmas. It helps a little but these people generally need way more help than they get. Sadly homelessness is on the rise in the uk and I believe in California as the gap between haves and have not grows.

In terms of receiving kindness, my parents putting up with being useless generally and always supporting and your kind giveaway last christmas

My family used to go to my grandparent's(mother's side) house every xmas eve for dinner and to listen to music(on an old style juke box no less)/do other holiday traditions, so I can relate.

As a bonus:

I once was extremely poor with a sick child. My kid had a series of surgeries and recoveries that put me in the hospital for 2 weeks. He was often passed out, but I needed to be there for when he was awake. I won two games from a giveaway on GOG by Ghorpm. One of them was The Longest Journey, which I played on my work PC at the hospital. It kept me busy and occupied and really made that entire event a lot more manageable.

I remember one Christmas when I was stuck in Minneapolis, a city where none of my family lived. I do know people in Minneapolis, though. So, one family invited me to spend the day with them. I was grateful. We hung around the house and played some games. We played some music. Then we all went out to a sports bar for big ol' paper baskets full of hamburgers and fries.
