I just watched our wonder mare WINX trot back along the rails and I was so proud of this seven year old as most of Australia is at the moment. The applause, clapping, whistling and cheers were all taken in by her as she paraded past the crowd and all the while looking at them.

Winx had just won her 4th WFA Cox Plate in a row which is history but also won her 29th race in a row,an amazing feat in itself.

To us she will be a National Heroine forever and we love her and I'm proud to be around to see this feat.

Any thoughts on your heroes or heroines?

Heroine, Tauto. Hehe. You're asking for national drugs. :-P

I personally find the gender divide on that word unnecessary. So I get it. We don't really use that word much.

Anyhoots, everyone has a national hero. And sometimes we're divided about who is a hero to us.

As far as the horse goes, I'm not an animal person, but I know a gal who does competitive house shows and I lived in Shelbyville, TN for a stint. And everyone tells me that the horse knows they won. They have pride. That's pretty neat.

Congrats on your horse!

Mare? Nightmare? Why not simply "horse"?
Get on an animal and kick the shit out of it in order to win a bunch of money for an owner who is already a billionaire.

WINX isn't a hero, she's a victim.
Did you mean heroine?
It's a term that gets used pretty loosely, especially over here. For instance, I'm some generic 'hero' for serving in the Navy, even though the closest I came to hazardous duty was seasickness during Gulf I. That's a stupid national quirk that cheapens the whole thing, IMO.

For me, I don't really have a name-specific hero to highlight. I'd rather point out the parents who are doing whatever they can to improve the lives of their kids while dealing with really tough circumstances. The parent who takes on the crappy shift or a second job, while still finding time to give the kids a loving home and not raise a family of dirtbags. The ones who are raising kids with some serious special needs, or who set aside their own lives for a bit to take care of family members in bad situations.

Tauto: 7 year old Mare, (Race horse).
Is WINX her full name? Because it feels like most of the horse names over here are nearly sentences, like Raindrops on Roses and Little Bit of Spice.
Heroin, horse?

A lot of horses enjoy racing... Don't assume she's a victim.
