My little adventure was just under a week ago, and figured I'd share some tidbits. First off, the food was garbage. They gave me a menu with which to circle my choices, but never got ANYTHING I asked for. Ordered French toast, a blueberry muffin, and some cereal; instead got a minuscule piece of toast, lukewarm eggs, and the worst grits I've ever had.
Second, I was bored out of my skull most of the time. Of course you can't have electronics, but they had no books and only one tv in the common area. I spent a good chunk of my first day just sleeping. They had some group therapy stuff I participated in, but I mostly resorted to making up cost functions and solving for budget constraints on a spare piece of paper. They also did a game of family feud and karaoke. Maybe I'm just being a cynic, but I just feel this kind of false sympathy and go-getter attitude from social workers who do that kind of stuff.
All the other patients were fine, with just one exception. Chick was childish but mostly ok during the day but would go off the rails at night, shouting shit and trying to move into other people's rooms. Had fun trying to sleep the first night, and one of the nurses told me she was probably acting out because I was a new guy.
Overall I only spent ~36 hours in the place. Thank god I was voluntarily admitted and was thus able to get out as soon as possible.
