Now that Blizzard has thoroughly tanked Overwatch, I'm looking for something new. I really enjoyed the game over the years - mainly as a support player as my aim typically isn't good enough to be worthwhile much in online play - but they had to ruin it with the completely unnecessary train wreck that is "2.0" that just keeps getting worse. *le sigh* Yeah, I'm out.

That was the first game I actually had a lot of fun just being the help. So are there any other team-based online FPSeses people could recommend that offer good support roles? I'm not looking for anything in the Battle Royal space. It also should have a decent playerbase. Not interested in ghost towns a la Paladins. Also, before someone recommends Team Fortress 2, that's been off my list for a long time for various reasons.

Any input would be much appreciated.

Don't know how you would feel about Insurgency.

Personally I used to play CS:Source for a long while back then, then when I discovered Insurgency (not Sandstorm) I have not played Source since.

Everytime when I want to play an online coop or vs multiplayer I install it (There's also Linux native version.) and while servers are not as populated as years ago, you will always find people playing at the right time.
If you say your aiming isn't good you might enjoy first-person slashers, like Vermintide. I do not recommend Warframe because it's a free-to-pay game which means you either spend a lot of time farming and crafting or you pay a lot of money.

AS for shooters with supportive roles: people usually play Call of Duty or Battlefield if they want to just run and shoot.
Dirty Bomb
I would actually not recommend this game, but it's worth posting just because it's Free to Play and I doubt there are actually many multiplayer FPS with support classes.

The Good: Support comes in 2 classes.

Ammo givers & Health givers. Some have ''drops'', some have deployable stations that you (should) place around corners.
Aside from giving health & ammo there are also secondary abilities. For medics it's just the ability to revive, but ammo givers can call in artillery, or throw molotov cocktails. (Area of denial ability)

Aside from these you could also play as Engineer.
The engineer has the purpose of completing map objectives, and can, for example, deploy an energy shield.

Now for the bad... oh boy...

When this game was released it was Pay to Win.
When Splash Damage made it freeware... all the components that mark P2W remained in the game...
There are ~22 characters in the game. You have access to... 3 (+3 that are rotating weekly.)
You want to play as one of the other 16 characters? Well, get to grinding! (Login tomorrow to receive +100g! Play 3 matches as Medic to get +500g!) ...

Should you decide to play -- you will be playing against people who are at this game for over 10 years now...

For these reasons I would not actually recommend this game... BUT it is free to play and the best Medic character is one of the starting ones. In typical Splash Damage fashion she can be a frontline soldier, but you can just as well play her by standing back.

Renegade X
Not exactly a ghost town... just... kinda...
On weekdays the only server should be half-emptly. On weekends, though, 64/64.
The one single support class is a tehnician with a healing-ray type of gun...
Does not actually sound that fun, but I have actually played matches that lasted upwards of 2 hours just running behind tanks and healing them! :D
Since you receive credits as the games goes on you can purchase tanks where aiming is just a secondary concern. Just fire in the general direction everyone else is.

Since it's a fan project - game is also freeware.

An example of gameplay: The Typical Renegade X Experience…

Sorry to post again P-E-S, I'd just like to clarify that the game I recommended, Insurgency, do have support roles, but focused on cover fire and overall team support with smoke and incendiary grenades.

It's a game that require minimum aim at least, but since you can play it coop online (with servers dedicated to coop mode only, agaisnt bots, team work is more important than aim. Together with a slow pace gameplay (more focused on realism), I think you may like it. But videos, as posted above, always help to decide.
Have you played any of the Battlefield-games? You have the roles of medic, engineer, support and recon for different tasks, such as reviving and healing, repairing vehicles, giving ammunition, spotting enemies etc.. While teamwork is somewhat questionable in public matchmaking, you do sometimes get really organized squads that actually care about the objective and play their roles as they should.

I've played them all, and while 2042 got some pretty poor reviews when it came out, I do think they managed to fix its problems. It's a much better game now than it was. I passed rank 100 a while ago

Rainbow Six Siege also has many characters with different roles and gadgets. It's pretty fun, but it's not a game I can play for long at a time. The community is very toxic imo.

Earth Defense Force. Each of the classes have potential to support the rest of the team, and the Air Raider is especially dedicated to the support role - they can summon columns of guided energy from the sky, set down flame turrets, spawn ambulances, place defense barriers, and so on. You might need beefy hardware for the game, as there are hundreds of ants, saucers, or giant robots dogging your every step.
