rtcvb32: As a child i enjoyed playing Questron... Which was an Ultima knockoff... So.. Ultima 1-3 perhaps? (Even better if they can barely read).

I'd say Tyrian, unless you don't want explosions... Triple Town is good, that recent Card City Nights game. Or Joust for the Atari computer system...

love joust...
Thanks, rtcvb! I, too, loved Joust. No Atari anymore though knowing my 4 year old, the vultures would likely scare him a bit haha. Similarly, Ultima is probably too much for them currently. I'm a huge RPG person so it's killing me I have to wait a few more years before they we can play these together.

Card City Night might be a good one for them - thanks for the suggestions!

Jasonofthenorth: Thanks! I couldn't find the mixes on gog.com before I posted this - where are they?

This looks to have a bunch of great suggestions. Thank you!
avatar
mrkgnao: Like a lot of things on GOG, it's a pain to find mixes. Some are listed here:
http://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_gogmix_central_thread_sharepromote_your_gogmixes_here

Otherwise, you need to remember some game from the mix and go to that game's page and hope the mix is rated high enough to be listed among the top 20 mixes listed at the bottom right of the page. Sad.
Boooooooooo - Hey GOG! Make this a section on your homepage, will ya??

MaximumBunny: https://www.gog.com/game/creatures_village How about this series? "Great addition to the collection, created with kids in mind"
avatar
Jasonofthenorth: Thanks, Bunny! Creatures looks like a great fit.
I highly second the Creatures series.

My own son played them quite a lot when he was young (and well before GOG existed). He loved them. I was pretty happy to see them here on GOG, and purchased them - but mostly for nostalgia; since he's an adult now. I keep thinking I'll fire them up one day just for the fun of it..

JudasIscariot: I believe this one is quite kid-friendly:

http://www.gog.com/game/the_manhole_masterpiece_edition

And, Teen Agent, which is free, should not have any killings or anything violent that I can think of.
Nice! Manhole looks perfect - I will give that a whirl with the kiddos. Thank you!

I've seen Teen Agent sitting in my library since I first joined GOG and never played it. I'll check that out, too!

Thanks so much, Judas!

bad_fur_day1: Viva Pinata.

They do attack and eat other Pinata sometimes, but the're only made of candy, so it's cool.

Dig up that garden, make a nice pond, grow some flowers.
Haha nice! I'll give it a look - thanks!

Pinball Gold Pack is quite fun!

Also: Broken Age

Jasonofthenorth: Despite my belief that video games do not encourage violence, I am trying to avoid anything with punching, hitting or otherwise destroying/"killing" other people/animals/creatures in the game. They are young enough it's difficult for them to separate games and reality when we're not immediately talking about it.

LEGO worlds looks like it could be great, but the shot of the guy punching skeletons turns me off a bit. The openness and building things like a snowman look perfect, though! Thoughts on that?
It's why I was hesitant to recommend Minecraft. If you want 100% creativity with no violence then it gets very difficult. Starmade might be one. Idk how much action it has, but that is a label. http://store.steampowered.com/app/244770/ I'm trying to think of builders and that's the problem. Usually you're building forts for defense or bases to attack from.

OH. If you want a really good ones, check out Toki Tori http://store.steampowered.com/app/38700/ and Crayon Physics Deluxe http://store.steampowered.com/app/26900/ - these are completely age appropriate. Not builders but puzzlers.

When they're older, Portal and Portal 2 are great at building logic. You can even make levels so they have an infinite amount of problems to solve.

When the time comes to introducing roleplaying games, I recommend the Paper Mario games (The Thousand Year Door in particular). They have a good aesthetic, and their combat system is rather engaging. For example, jumping onto a Spiny would hurt Mario and cancel his attack - but your Koopa ally can spin himself into that same enemy, knocking it over. With the underbelly exposed, Mario can now directly attack with his jump. Alternatively, Mario can use a Pow Block to cause a earthquake to knock it over, or apply a hammer.

Marioface5: No "punching, hitting or otherwise destroying/"killing" other people/animals/creatures in the game" at all is a pretty tough thing to pick out. From what I've seen and/or remember, I can recommend the following, all of which are available here on GOG:

- Triple Town
- A Story About My Uncle
- Tiny and Big: Grandpa's Leftovers
- Sokobond
- Incredipede
- Tri: Of Friendship and Madness
- VVVVVV
- Kerbal Space Program
- Adventures of Shuggy
- Race the Sun
- OlliOlli
- OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood
- Chronology
- Unmechanical: Extended
- Moto Racer
- Moto Racer 2
- Puddle

I hope this list helps.
Thanks so much for putting this list together, Marioface! That was very kind. Sokobond, VVVVVV, Kerbal, Race The Sun, Chronology, and Unmechanical all are on my list now.

Shuggy looks fun, but because he has sharp teeth I'm going to table it for now. Ah kids... =)

Thanks again! This was a great list!

Pinball! What a great suggestion!

Broken Age looks kickass. Themes a bit old for the kiddos, but I wishlisted it for myself!

Thanks!

I think Banished is a nice builder where the only adversary you have to face is nature itself, in the form of changing seasons. But it may be a bit hard for a 4 year old.

Thomas Was Alone is a platformer which is kid friendly and has no violence.

Rocket League seems kid friendly as well given that it just soccer with cars and has split screen support so all three of your kids might be able to play it at same time provided there's enough controllers. It has up to 4 player split screen support, so you may be able to join them as well.

Once they are a bit older you might get them to play Civilization V, I am not a parent so I could be completely wrong but it feels like a nice way to get them interested in history and about the way that our society has developed from the ancient times.

Hahahahahaha! Yes, I also plan to show them Duke Nukem. Mainly for the strippers with tassels. They need to learn.
Nice recommendations here, I'll add some of these to the kid-friendly gogmix.

Also a related thread here which might be of use:

I haven't been maintaining it well, been too preoccupied with work stuff, but hopefully will be able to get back on it at some point. :)

You're on a roll tonight! Toki Tori was $0.49 - grabbed that - and Crayon Physics looks incredible. They will like the coloring aspect of that, and it's very open. Got that, too.

Minecraft would be too scary, yes. Thanks for your consideration and help!

4... yeah just a little young... When he reaches 7-10 you can probably introduce him to the older computer games. Honestly i couldn't hardly read when i started playing Questron. You just press all the buttons to figure out what each does what, and then just walk around and explore.

On the other hand, if you got an authentic Atari controller, those things are pretty tough. Other Atari games to consider (probably via emulator) would be Spy Hunter, Jump Man, Realm of Impossibility, Superman, Spy vs Spy, Astroids, Qbert, Defender, Missile Defense, Pole Position, My First Alphabet, Clowns, etc.

My mom said as a kid (4-6?) she just set me in front of the computer and i would watch it for hours, so maybe just the demos running, or maybe the demo scene where they push the hardware to the limits. Hmmm with that in mind you could probably get one of those Rasberry Pi Zero's and put the atari emulator and stuff on it, then if he breaks it you only lose $5 in hardware :P (Plus the joystick... and/or keyboard)

Banished looks cool for me to play. Tomas was alone is definitely on the shortlist. Colored rectangles? Sign us up!
