I wanted to give it Steam integration another try just now, re-entered my login details as usual. I then noticed a message saying:

"In case of problems with authentication, we'll switch your Steam integration into Public Profiles mode to improve stability. Read more."

Wait, what? Will GOG set my profile page visibility to public on its own? Time to "Read more" I guess. I Ctrl + clicked without giving it much thought because I wanted to keep the login window open of course, but it actually replaced the login window. :( I guess I should've opened it in a new window, not a new tab, so I Shift + clicked, but again it did the opposite of what I wanted, replaced the login window. :( Merely clicking finally opened it in a new window. I suppose just clicking is intuitive enough when you're not familiar with using tabs and windows, but when you are, the behaviour I described first is very counter-intuitive.

Entered my name and password, figured I would read the explanation later, but submitting my details for some reason closed the window explaining things without asking. Getting a bit disappointed now. :(

Oh, and when I retraced my steps, I found the explanation is actually just a GitGub page with a whole bunch of irrelevant text before I found a bit that seems like it could be relevant:

"Default behavior
Initial backend (with the login window) is set to use Steam Network and switches to Public Profiles automatically when stored token become invalid (for the main reason see #74).
"

Actually less clear text than the original message, a main reason, apparently other unnamed reasons, stored tokens, #74. Well, that explains everything in a user friendly way. :)

Then it sadly ends with Steam integration still not working. Anyway, I figured I'd mention the above in the hope that you could improve things a bit. Thanks for listening.
Afaik steam integration has been dead for months.
Checking the github, looks like someone has started working on a new integration, might be worth a try/look.

Yes, there is a fork with a fix for the authentication. I am not sure where to get it though...
