Well that game has a pretty dumb and unfair mechanic: Each time a character is in melee battle and wants to retreat (because he`s wounded and you want to save his life), all enemies standing near this character have a free attack on your character, no matter if they have already spent their attack for the round or not. This means, as soon as a charcater is wounded, he is dead!
After the first battle I de-installed this game and never touched it again.

No offense, but that criticism says more about your incompetence than any flaws of the game. Attacks of opportunity against passing characters are a feature of many combat systems and the implementation of that mechanic in Expeditions: Conquistador is perfectly sensible.

Well, but I never saw it implemented in such an unfair and rage inducing way.

Well, it wasn't my experience, and I'm hardly a hardcore gamer. To me the rules made perfect sense and weren't unfair at all. You just have to weigh the risks/benefits of retreats and plan them accordingly (maybe send another character to support the retreat, take a route away from enemies...or don't get your characters into such dangerous situations in the first place, you have a lot of freedom about how to place your characters after all, including options like creating choke points with barricades etc.). I think you didn't give the game enough of a chance.

There is a universal ability called "Tactical Move" which allows a character to move without triggering attacks of of opportunity. However, it comes at a cost of being unable to perform an attack on that turn.

Spanish scouts (Man-at-Arms rank and higher) and Native warriors have a "Sneak" ability. It's similar to "Tactical Move" in the sense that it doesn't provoke attacks of opportunity. Unlike "Tactical Move", "Sneak" allows the user to also attack on their turn. However, it also cuts the movement range in half.

thx, I had forgotten about those options. It's really a pretty fair system imo.
