Well, I am fairly late to the party, but invested in an iPad, and been looking at games for travelling over the last year. Here appear to be a few which are both good, and not an excuse to bleed you dry or bore you to tears with adverts. So here is what I have picked up and some text about each, please go ahead and suggest some that you think good and why.

Ascension - the game I have put most hours into. Deck builder, can be played locally. Lots of variety and well executed. And single player.

Grimvalor - what a cracker. Platformer hack and slash, but really well executed and entertaining. Got it on sale and it was well worth it, even at full price.

Card Crawl/Card Thief - interesting beat the deck card games. For my mind it didn’t have enough variety to keep me coming back, I.e. you have to win 20 or so times to even unlock something.

Traps n gemstones - platformer/Metroid type game. Well executed, lots of fun finding all the secrets, could do with a better map though.

Warlords - yes, the old classic, and just as good here.

Earn to die 1/2 - simple mindless fun. Nothing much else to say.

The quest - eye of the beholder clone. Pretty good. Expansive world, lots of enemies. Lots of expensive expansions as well!

Cat quest - it’s ok, fluid control. Mostly lots of the same though.

Apple knight (the paid version, it costs 99p to remove ads and make it good). Another platformer with some upgrades. Pretty hard.

In terms of free ones, I have a fair few and mileage varies, with in app purchases, adverts etc. The one I will give special mention to however:
Stranger things - the first game is free and it is a cracking good game. You should have this one.
