I just bought Civilization V Bundle ($7). At work, can't download it now

How do these newer strategy games compared to the Interplay's old one?

Besides Civilization games, what other games can ya recommend that is similar and better than Conquest of the New World?

The Anno series has always given me the same vibe I got back in the day when playing Conquest of the New World, but you have to consider the Anno series games are RTS-es, so the gameplay and required skill sets will be a bit different. I still play Anno 1404 every now and then and recommend it warmly.
