I'm trying out Wine/Wine Bottler on Mac. I gambled and bought Secret of Monkey Island and actually got it to play the start. But then I quit and can't find it. It did have a few error messages but the game was definitely running.

The problem is I can't FIND the game. It clearly installed somewhere. It WORKED. Does anyone have any idea where it ends up when installed on a Mac?

I'm also concerned at THIS: /Applications/Secret of Monkey Island.app/Contents/Resources/wineprefix/drive_c/windows/Installer/19fe.msi: Win.Trojan.Agent-1429193 FOUND

which came from the mac virus scan. I don't know enough to know what caused it!

I'd really like it to get it working in Wine for my Macbook because I've read the game breaks on Win 10 anniversary update (which I've fought off by yanking the ethernet cord from the Windows PC. But that is clearly a temporary all or nothing fix, since I can't get any security updates that way. So...Wine for mac is my best hope.)

a wee bit of search would help, wouldn't it? ;)

And the message of a virus, as this is a WIN game and even if it would have a virus (which it does not have) this virus could do (sorry) shit to a wrong operating system ;)
*Results may wildly vary.

GoG would never package games with viruses. Thanks for the concern over a likely false positive though.
I know It wasn't GOG that did the virus. It was some weird thing from the wine installing stuff to run windows stuff. The question is how I can avoid that.

I know other people have successfully installed the game using this. I've never used the program before though. I thought about Wine Crossover, but that one is not only paid for but that one does not report successful installs using the Gog or Steam installers, whereas straight up Wine has.

The game in question is being flagged as a false positive for whatever reason. You should be able to whitelist files from our installers as we wouldn't be in business very long if we were to hand out virus-laden files left and right :)

You can try turning your virus scanner off while installing and then playing the game and then when you are done just turn it back on again, if that helps matters any :)

The game is inside the App/application that your virus scanner gave out as a virus warning, it's in /Applications/Secret of Monkey Island.app/. WineBottler creates an App for every bottle (that's the windows environment you install your program/game in). You just need to click on Secret of Monkey Island in your application folder to start Wine and the installed windows game/program inside of it.

Crossover is another GUI for Wine with focus for easy installation. They have a database with supported games and programs, which is mostly created by the community. The good thing about it is that, compared to other wine based programs, it's really easy to use and many games are already supported. The negative thing is that it's not cheap and of course not all windows games are supported..

Another option for you is to check is Porting Kit. It's a free program based on Wineskin, another graphical user interface of Wine. It's a project of Paul the Tall, someone who was very active to create installation routines for Crossover in the first place and then started to make with the Porting Kit it's on free available project thanks to Wineskin.

Unfortunately Crossover and also Porting Kit do not have The Secret of Monkey Island listed in their databases, so you need to play around with the configuration by yourself.

Edit: To get a better idea where you game is I should maybe explain what exactly an App is. Very simplified an App is just an folder with all necessary files/libraries/etc in it. You can easily take a look inside an App by right-clicking on it then choose "Show package content". There you will also find your windows game files but also wine and all needed files for it.

Good news. I checked the databases of Porting Kit and Crossover again to see if maybe the second Monkey Island game is supported. And yes, it is. Both games are very similar and I guess they use the same game engine, so I tried to install the first game with the configuration of the second one. And yes, the game starts fine, with Crossover and also Porting Kit. I played maybe 4-5 minutes without any problems, including switching between the graphic styles (classic & modern), changing the resolution and switching from fullscreen to windowed mode.

So what you can do to play it without paying any money for Crossover:

1. Download and install Porting Kit (http://portingkit.com/en/download.php).
2. Make a copy of your Monkey Island GOG installer and rename the file to setup_monkey_island2_se_2.0.0.10.exe. The reason for this is that Porting Kit is unfortunately exactly looking for the installer of the second game.
3. Start Porting Kit. It will ask you where it should install your games to, maybe it will also ask for an update.
4. In Porting Kit go to the library and click on the server button. You will see now a big list of supported games. Then search for Monkey Island. Click on Monkey Island 2 SE and navigate to the renamed installer. Porting Kit will now start to download all other necessary files from the internet (direct-x, .net, etc) and creates a bottle for the game. After the installation of all the needed runtime environment stuff like direct-x it will start to install Monkey Island. Don't worry, the installation will end with some error messages. That's not a problem as the installation was fine, the error messages are a known problem with wine and the gog installer. Also Porting Kit says it can't find the Monkey Island 2 executable, which isn't a surprise, as we installed the first game. But that's also fixable.
5. Now switch from "Server" to "Local" to see all your installed games, there should now be a "Monkey Island 2" installation. To change the executable, right-click on the Monkey Island 2 icon and choose properties. You will now get a new window including the option to change the path to the executable. Click on the magnifier icon right of the path field, navigate to the Monkey Island 1 game folder (GOG Games, then Monkey Island 1 SE) and choose MISE.exe. Accept the settings and leave the properties. If you now press on the play button the game should start.

Don't worry, my description sounds more complicated as it really is. In short, what you need to remember is that you need to trick Porting Kit that you would like to install Monkey Island 2 by changing the installer name and later changing the path to the Monkey Island 1 executable. Everything else will be done by Porting Kit.

Ah. In this case the odd thing was the app said it was installed but never appeared in the applications folder. I assume I can avoid the scan alert by installing it somewhere else (clamxav sentry is actively scanning that folder). I managed to get the installer to work but that just installed the game (again) who knows where.

Moving to Plan B:
I'm thinking i grab the installed game from the PC (which seemed to work fine since ye evil anniversary update is still blocked) there and then bring that to the mac (instead of the installer) and maybe use wine straight from the games EXE?
Very often files with the file extension .exe are perceived by antivirus as malware. Maybe you just need a good virus scanner?
