Gift prices in your region are equivalent to the games' region-free price. Due to this, gift codes purchased directly on GOG.com can be redeemed globally with no regional restrictions. If you're shopping for yourself, deselect the "GIFT THIS ORDER" option to purchase at your local price. Thank you for answering!
I have not yet attempted to buy any game as a gift, so this was completely unknown to me.
I would think that having said information available in the Gifting articles on the Support pages would prevent people from finding out "after the fact", and so prevent any feelings of surprise.
It does make sense to have a region-free price for gifting, but when people usually only buy for themselves, the difference can come as a small shock.
