The SPACE RANGERS series is sort of like what you want.
Every game in that series is a very "choose your own path/choose your own adventure".

I heard that the game supposedly isn't as good though, writing-wise (plot+writing), or at least the gamebook game - how did you feel about it?

The worst thing in Space Rangers HD is probably the RTS batles followed by arcade mode inside blackholes. Luckily you aren't forced to play RTS mode if you don't want to...you can tell game NPC's to never offer you RTS battle missions.

As I can remember, you can turn off arcade mode in Space Rangers 1. Don't know about Space Rangers HD as I haven't played it yet.

I assume gamebook game is Space Rangers Quest? This game is a compilation of various in-game planetary quests, mostly from Space Rangers 2. The source material is so much fun, but I can't image how they managed to translate it into English without ruining its style.
