Download the offline installer. You will find it in extras.

just did it and i was able to see one second of the intro and then it looped and when i closed it with task manager it quickly said are you sure you want to quit and then it ended
Administrator shouldn't be required.

Those permissions is mostly to install a number of dependencies into system-protected directories.

BUT, with the offline installer you can right-click on the installer and 'run as administrator' if it comes to that.

Also for some reason most games default to running as admin, which i suggest removing unless it's required.

The offline installers actually always require elevated privileges, that's because many people install into a directory that requires administrator games to write into.

If the game is then ... 'old fashioned' and writes configuration files and/or savegames directly into it's own directory, it also has to be run as administrator.

Modern games write to Appdata and Documents and therefore don't require such rights.

If you install Fallout intot a directory that does not require administrator rights (in my case I use "d:\games\GOG\Gamedir"), no game should ever requite these rights.

Probably need to specify that a number of games previously wanted to install to C:\Program Files, Morrowind i remember for sure. In recent versions of windows, Program Files and Windows are protected system directories, They are locked and you can't write/change them without being admin.

GoG installers that I've seen now point to C:\GOG Games which is not a protected system directory. Though older installers you could change the default install directory to safe one.

Running the Morrowind exe optimizer was especially annoying, since every change was a different write/access and had to approve access for each one else the whole thing failed. While having said optimizer run outside of Program Files worked without a hitch.

Yep, either Windows XP or Windows 7 were the first Windows versions that locked access to program files for non-admins (as it should be and is done on all other modern operating systems). Before that, no special rights were required.

The GOG Offline installers has two levels of directory suggestions.
1. if you installed the game before, it will suggest the same location again
2. If you haven't installed it before, it will suggest the same base directory which you chose last time you chose a installation directory. Only if you never changed anything it will suggest the default location. I don't know what that was originally, since it has been a long long time ago that I changed my first installation dir.

For the older installers think i remember it defaulting to the C:\Program Files, and didn't keep track of any preferences for other installers.

But i could easily be wrong. Not really important to the discussion.

You're right, that's just a minor detail. But even the previous generation installers (those without the gog build number) behave like this, Falcon 4 would be a example or Unmetal, Silent Service. Those have never been updated and still use the old system.

Ok, so you have downloaded the offline installer.

Now, right-click on that installer.

From the menu choose: run as administrator

Simply follow through the installation process.

Done.
