GWENT: The Witcher Card Game just got another major update that's all about positioning: Positioning the cards inside the battlefield and positioning GWENT in the place it needs to be for its journey forward. Here's what CD PROJEKT RED have to say about both the recently implemented and upcoming changes:

Hey there!

It’s been a busy time for GWENT, with our visit to PAX East and the announcement of GWENT Challenger — an official The Witcher Card Game tournament. And it actually gets busier from here on out. We’ve just released a new update for the game and we’re here to tell you more about the features it introduces, how they lay the foundations for what we have in store for you in the future, and what that’s going to be.

WHAT’S NEW IN GWENT

One of the major features of the latest update is Unit Positioning. You can now choose where you want to place cards on the row — this change factors heavily into how abilities interact with units on the board.

Take a look.

Up to this point, there haven’t been many ways to let your opponent know what you’re thinking. This changes with Taunts, short phrases that allow players to communicate by clicking on their avatar.

Take a look.

The board now features a Move History. It lets you review which cards have been played over the course of the match, which can come in handy when you’re looking to outplay your opponent. Like they say, knowledge is power.

Take a look.

Speaking of the board, we’ve given it a general facelift to make it more legible and accessible, letting you see more even when you’re in the heat of battle.

Take a look.

The latest update also introduces changes to cards and tweaks improving the balance and overall experience. There’s actually a lot of those. You can check them all out in the full changelog.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR GWENT

The updated board and visual tweaks introduced in the Positioning Update are the first step of a visual overhaul coming to GWENT. This isn’t going to happen overnight, but rather over the course of the next several major updates. To give you a sense of what to expect, we’re talking new targeting indicators and card highlights, card movement animations and shadows, and unique effects for abilities.

We’ve got more premium animated versions of cards in the works, with the plan being for every card in the game to have its own animated variant. We’ll definitely be hiding some easter eggs in there, so make sure to be on the lookout for these once they’re in the game.

We are also committed to adding more cards to GWENT in general in the not-too-distant future. And with all these new cards set to arrive, as well as other upcoming changes, starter decks will be getting a refresh, too.

Card abilities and descriptions will be getting a revamp as well, so that they’re more intuitive. A big part of this will be standardizing how certain cards work and behave after being played, resulting in simpler and more reliable ability priorities.

Using this chance, we’d like to thank you for the amazing support you’re giving GWENT. You comments and suggestions are a tremendous help in shaping the game and making it a better experience.

Geralt: Aard totaly sucks...

Instead of allowing it's use even on the siege row (from where it could move the units to the melee row) they restrict it's use only on the ranged row? Boy, they must realy hate this card... Absolutely insane idea that was made for sure in favor of the Monsters (who tend to put the most of their cards on melee row) and Skelligers (who adore the siege row and put most of their units there). Makes this card completely useless.

graphics

Is uglyness the new trend in gwent? Why does it seem to me that the graphics of all the cards went down in resolution, they look all like covered by a piece of semi-transparent plastic... And the new board? Oh no... What was wrong with the board before the Nilfgaardian update - speaking about color palette and back sides of the cards? Thankfuly they did not make the board color white, I would come to myself like shopping in Tesco (who's company colors are red, white, and blue)... Oh no, oh no...

permadeath

Well, finaly... Correct me if I am wrong, but looks like permadeath is permadeath indeed without exceptions. Good.

Aretuza Adept

And just where will this Aretuza Adept be spawned? Melee row? Ranged?? Siege??? Any???? How about adding at least an icon to it, if it is too much asked to mention that in the description. I grow slightly pissed of by these inaccurate descriptions... Edit: They are spawned on the siege row.

Philippa Eilhart

Good they have put some sense into this card. Finaly usable much more often than before.

zoom card window

Now this is interesting... I wonder what made the devs to remove the artists names who contributed to the cards appearance from the line below each card in this window? Affraid of constructive criticism? Won't help you much, we can still tell a daub from artwork. Are you going to remove the cards names too?

Cyprian Wiley

aka The Whoreson Junior, sanctimonously renamed to not to sound too rude? Well, how decent is The Witcher 3 then, full of fucking, gagging, farting, shitting etc. ?? Or is it meant for any different spectrum of players....

Anyway, the cards with similar funcionality somehow multiply. Is the difference between Cyprian Wiley and the Maerdroeme/Spores realy that big, just because you made the Maerdroeme/Spores to take only 2 off the targeted unit's base strength? We have a lack of fantasy here, don't we...

Ragh nar Roog

Do you realy think such noble title as this deserves such ridiculous functionality? A gold card, expensive on scraps as hell, it's premium version even more, and the player can not even choose which off the opponent's card will it target? I would ask the esteemed devs, why do you dev something what you do not want? And when you do not want it, why don't you cancell it righ away? Or is it the problem with your not knowing, what you want?

This card, in this rarity and this color, is absolutely useless...

You can still use the card to move units from melee row.

What - realy? So I put it on my ranged row and move the opponent's units from melee? Oh yes, I see it now. Even so, restricting the positioning of this card to ranged row puts you into disadvantage - you have 7 points less defense there against Geralt: Igni...

finally...
Why Radovid? Why!! Crying......
Hi, having an issue with updating the game. It tries to start running the update but it cancels and says the game is running when it is not on my computer. Also, verify and repair is grayed out and I don't know why. Any help with this would be appreciated
I'm disappointed. Positioning is boring. What the point in such micromanagement? And sometimes this system will gave advantagement for game fractions, that can instantly summon a lot of units or spawned units, because, for example, of Dimeritium bomb's effect area for them now significantly reduced. Hail Henselt Goldshitter! He will rule again.
Looks like a great update!

Can the new "taunt" feature be disabled/muted if we don't want it?
The changelog is missing a note that Vernon Roche can longer target gold units.

Also, can you add some organization to future change logs? It would be way easier to read if multiple line items for the same card were grouped together.

There's two problems with the update :

1- Yennefer Conjurer was supposed to be changed to only target one random card if more than one have the highest value.

2- Some card art became really low resolution along with value numbers.

Other than that, I had two crashes on this patch, something I never had since the start of the beta.

Pretty much all cards that can target gold units were nerfed :'(

Try uninstalling completely (deleting saved data), then reinstalling. Mine kept crashing even after verifying and repairing, but a fresh install seemed to do the trick. Don't worry, your profile and cards are cloud saved, so they'll be loaded correctly.

Don't... This way Radovid can be much more dangerous then before... Imagine what will he do with those damned Mahakam Defenders...

Luckily, she was not :-)

I do not like this new course of dementing all the possible cards to the lowest possible level...

Well, raise enough fuss and this will be sure cancelled in the next update. Destroying what was built before is the new course in gwent...
