I'm just guessing, but maybe that installer installed the files to the main game directory when they should be in the 'system' folder.
This is the link to the guide I followed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7uiJrPwQ6U

And this is the link to the file I downloaded and installed.

https://www.worldofgothic.de/download_591.htm

Can anyone tell by looking if I've perhaps installed malware? I did get a Windows Defender warning that I had to override on a couple of files, but I don't remember if it was the DX11 renderer or not.

Okay, that sounds like then it's probably not a big deal?

I'm wondering what the difference is between the two now. And whether I'd be better off unzipping that other file in the system directory or using the setup file again and making sure it's in the system folder. But I swear when I installed it that I did direct it to the system folder.

Man I think I'm just going to start over again.

Can anyone tell by looking which of those DX11 choices I should choose?

The screenshot below just shows the one I used, the link in Kobi-K's post is the "other one".

Okay, I just watched the portion that I watched when I did it, and in that video he specifies the Gothic folder, not the Gothic system folder, so yeah, I'm anal about following directions so I'm guessing that I did in fact install it in the gothic folder instead of the gothic system folder.

I didn't read the comments. Wonder if anyone pointed out his mistake? Seems like it should be fixed for when other morons like me who don't know this stuff just follow directions. He should edit his you tube.
As far as the last screenshot is concerned, I only did steps 1 3 and 5 and it worked without issues for me

The Player Kit and the System Pack, I also downloaded from the worldofgothic site and not from GitHub (no idea if they're different).

https://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/download_595.htm
The link for the Player Kit is near the bottom of the page.

I followed about 5 or 7 guides, verbatim from start to finish, and always got access violations. It just so happened that this was the one installed when I read about running in Windowed mode.

So I still have "issues" in that there is no fix (that I could find) that makes it run "normally." I always got access violations. Then when I changed the run in windowed mode in the ini file from 0 to 1, that did it.

So I'm glad you had no issues. But I still have issues. Still, the only way I can play it without access violations is to run it in windowed mode.

I didn't try any of the other guides that I followed in windowed mode. It just happened to be this one when I found that tip to try and it worked.
Just download and extract this file to the Gothic\system\ game folder. If it doesn't work, then do a fresh install.

https://github.com/kirides/GD3D11/releases/download/v17.8-dev9/GD3D11-v17.8-dev9.zip

https://github.com/kirides/GD3D11#installation--usage

When I tried installing that installer you linked to it wanted to install to this directory. I don't know what the hell this is supposed to be:

C:\GOG Games\Gothic\Bonne6, Ataulien, Kirides, SaiyansKing\GD3D11
Attachments:
So I decided to do an entire reinstall after all. (Damn I have to start over again).

BUT - THIS TIME IT WORKED PERFECTLY. No access violations even though I'm not in windowed mode.

I'm not sure what stopped the access violations, but I THINK it might have been Union. I'm not sure I had that installed right before. Also, too, in one youtube video it showed just running the DX11 setup file in the Gothic folder. BUT, another one showed you did in fact point the setup file to the Gothic folder, BUT there was a step after that, and I either missed it in the other youtube or it wasn't there. Anyway, the setup file does work, it just requires another step afterwards.

Bottom line - I installed Gothic, Playerkits 1.08 and 2.8, System Pack 1.8, Union 1.0, Community Patch, Community Patch Plus, RiisisGothic1TextureMixV1.1, and the Gothic DirectX11 Clockwork Edition.

Crossed my fingers, started it, and it started right up. No hangs, no access violations (even when starting new game) and the DX11 options box showed up the first time I installed it. No ini tweaks, nothing else.

This all just shows what a moron I am. I did have one moment of full on panic attack when my controller wouldn't work. I hadn't ever had that issue before. Apparently either the Union or Community Patch changed the launch executable. With the Logitech profiler, you have to point to the executable you want the mapping to apply to. I had it pointed to Gothic.exe. All I had to do to get my controller back was point it instead to GothicMod.exe.

Voila. Game works, no windowed mode needed. Controller works. DX11 works.

That only took two weeks. lol

Thank everyone so much for all of your help.

There is one minor issue if someone might now how to help. The in game menus are now transparent. I don't like that, and want the box back. In other words, if you pull up the main menu, it's just the words over the scenery, no box anymore. My old eyes need that solid background. Not a deal breaker, but if anyone comes along and knows how to get it back to "normal" please let me know.

And thanks again to everyone. Sorry for being such a moron. Have a great day. I'm off to the colony (to start over again but I can live with that).
Hi, There is another excellent texture pack called [G1] Medarion Texture Pack. It has full widescreen support with new artwork for the menu, interface, chapters and loading screens. It has great characters, NPCs, enemies, armor and weapon textures, and the world textures looks like a HD version of the original Gothic (the Riisis TextureMix is great but looks too dark sometimes).

I don't think you would need HDR Enabled with this texture pack. And by the way, I don't think you need to start the game from scratch, if you kept your saved games they should work with most mods.

Here's the Mod's page, it's in Polish, so it needs to be translated. It had a ton of pictures and the download link will take you to a mega.nz account with a bunch of files to download:

https://www.bractwospolszczenia.pl/showthread.php?tid=1007&pid=32760#pid32760

You should download these files and extract them to the Gothic\data folder.

G1_Medarion_Texturespack.zip
G1_Medarion_Texturespatch_DX11.zip
G1_New_Run_Anims.rar
FONT_G2.rar

About Riisis TextureMix, you don't need to delete it, just rename it from *.vdf to *.vd- and you could rename it back if you decide to delete the Medarion Texture Pack files.

EDIT: Previous link is dead. Here's new working links

[G1] Medarion Textures Pack (page is in polish, you'd need some browser translation plug-in like TWP to translate).

OldFatGuy: 2) The inventory items that are highlighted are now not just highlighted, but spinning rapidly. I guess that was an intentional thing to make it easy to see which item is highlighted, but I hate it. I never had any trouble distinguishing what was highlighted vanilla, and I'd like to disable that.
There is an "Animated_Inventory" setting in SystemPack.ini (in Gothic's "system" dir) - set it to "0".

I think it is part of the texture mod. I didn't install it and the box was non-transparent.

Nope, it's the renderer. I tried different wrappers - dgVoodo2, GD3D11 (https://github.com/SaiyansKing/GD3D11/releases) and LegacyAltRenderer (https://github.com/SaiyansKing/Gothic-LegacyAltRenderer) - they all work (except dgVoodoo2 and LegacyAltRenderer have that bug in the forest, that you mentioned - it is 100% reproducible).

You mean others see that same weirdness in the forest? Gee, now I wonder if it's game related.

Yep. I've found a spot in the forest, where it happens all the time.
It seems that Microsoft messed something up with translation of that old DirectX code to newer hardware's API's. I've read about it on LegacyAltRenderer page (there is an outdated link, that you can browse through InternetWaybackMachine).

edit: every time i got an "Access Violation" error, there was a mention of a D3D9On12 Microsoft's library. So it's theirs stuff is not working. When you replace it with any other renderer - game works.

That was so weird. I was actually fighting a scavenger, when it jumped around to the side, so I turned to hit it in that direction, and it was white nothingness. Yet I could still hear the thing, and it was hitting me (or biting me I guess).

Then after I did manage to kill it, the words "scavenger" showed up on the screen, but it was nothing there. lol

Really weird. That's when I tried quitting and restarting, and even restarting the computer.

The thing is it was so early in the game, and there was still so much map left to explore I was afraid it would be a recurring problem. That's why I decided to reinstall.

In a way, I'm glad. Check the screenshots to see how amazing it looks when you use DX11 and HDR.

I've stumbled upon this comment:
https://github.com/kirides/GD3D11/issues/104#issuecomment-1250112490
" Also don't use the clockwork because it's outdated and the newer versions are much more performant and many bugs were fixed"

Make sure you use the latest version of the renderer (the link Kobi-K posted, or from here https://github.com/SaiyansKing/GD3D11/releases - it seems there are more recent builds of GD3D11 from the "kirides"'s github repository).

edit: link.

Why are all of my scavengers now Scavengers of Nau? WTF?

And I really miss waking up to the cynic in the Old Camp. Always liked that.

"Yaawwwn - A new day. And nothing has changed." Always made me smile.

It's party time! (screenshot)

About that, I found this L'Hiver style Menu/Inventory and Bars Patch made by Riisis. It looks really nice and has a solid background. Just extract the file to the Gothic\data folder.

When I tried to run the game with this mod the first time, it gave me an error message which had to do with the file name: RiisisNEWRET2MenüPatchmitInventarBars.vdf needed to be named to RiisisNEWRET2MenuPatchmitInventarBars.vdf
