Roguelite city builder?!! And once again I completely missed its existence. Thank you Doc, for unearthing what looks like another gem. I'm in!
That game looks really interesting. I'd like to be in as well and thank you for your generosity.
This game in dev has already very good ratings.
But I'm not sure I like the time limit in every level tho..

There are objectives to meet, and personally I'd say the time limit fits in with that both thematically and practically.

Plus, while there are an array of systems and some amount of exploration (though with a risk/reward balance) the game design doesn't lend itself to infinite playtime on a single map. Some resources (trees) are abundant, but others relatively scarce. You can lose population over time, but if memory serves - I haven't played in a few months - you only get new population from certain triggered events and those are finite.

So yeah, I think it's found a pretty creative niche for itself, but the roguelite + city builder may well not be for everybody. I don't know how they'd just turn on a persistent map though and have it actually be balanced at all.

There is a demo that I think just has the first mission if you want to try it: https://www.gog.com/en/game/against_the_storm_demo (also on Steam)

Ok, I watched a video and the game seems interesting, even if maybe a tad complicated at the start.

There's a pause mechanic, so it's not fully real-time. Good so the player will be able to plan without worries.
The active timer runs quite fast tho, maybe too much.
EDIT: ah, completing quests reduces a bit the impatience timer, at least.

The map exploration seems pretty limited.
Another issue is that reviews report that the RNG aspect is way too prevalent.

I guess I'll wait and see how the game evolves.

Yeah, I can see that argument. I played <10 hours so I'm not an expert. Honestly at the end of the day I thought the balance was fine, and the real issue (that keeps coming up) wasn't the game, it's that I'm not nearly into roguelites in reality as I think I am when I'm looking at a game.

From a roguelite perspective, Idk, I am a little skeptical that RNG is too major of an issue, esp. since IIRC you can fail a map and still proceed I think the thing I wanted to be more robust/more diverse than it was is the permanent bonuses ("Deeds"?) system.

It probably is well designed (or at least could be balanced to be) in terms of the long-term tactical decision-making, but it felt a little too opaque for a new, semi-casual player, whereas it seems to be really rewarding for roguelite or tactical diehards based on a lot of the reviews/comments I've seen. If it were the only game in my library, I suspect I could get a ton of play out of it, but it's easier to gravitate back to RPGs and puzzle games, etc.

The tactical decisions of what to invest in (which map type, and thus which races and which buildings) seems pretty core to getting the most out of the game, but I am just not roguelite-committed enough to get over that hump, not just with this game a but a lot of them. So it can simultaneously be a very good game and yet not for any particular person.

Anyway, I'll stop OTing the thread. But there is a demo, and anyone who thinks they might be interested should try - I think it's very well done, even if it's not quite in my wheelhouse.
