it's usually the other way around for me.
I usually say "the sequel will be better", but when I play it after the prequel I always like the prequel more.
Deus ex 1 is better than HR (2 sucks of course),
Dark souls 1 is better than 2 and 3,
The witcher 1 is better than 2 and 3,
Fallout 1 is better than 2,
Torchlight 1 is better than 2,
Morrowind is better than Oblivion and Skyrim,
Dragon Age Origins is better than 2 and Inquisition,
ecc...


The only real exception is the Hitman series (that I can remember right now)... I like Hitman 2 more than Hitman 1.... But still I think hitman 2 is better than 3, 4 and absolution.

I purposefully never compare games, in order to avoid getting a game "ruined" :)
Even if it's a sequel, I always try to look at it as an idividual game, and enjoy it as such.

My friend refused to play many good RPGs, saying that "X and Y games do it better". I don't want to do this.

Yea, post Morrowind Bethesda RPGs are so brain dead it makes appreciate stuff like Daggerfall, Morrowind and New Vegas even more.

I remember being a huge Civilization fan until I played Europa Universalis 2.

All those historical events (I still remember when suddenly many of my alliances were broken because of the Reformation emerging during my first playthrough) and the world in one of the most interesting periods of history.

Now Civilization seems a little bit too generic for me. I consider it a good game but not an excellent one anymore.

I guess you can say Thief and Deus Ex series ruined most run and gun shooters for me as they lack the depth in comparison.

Pillars of Eternity ruined any trust left in kickstarter for me, although I didn't initially funded it and I was following it. I thought it was going to be so amazing with all the great people developing it, turns out so boring and took a backward step compared to BG which is almost two decades old.

I rather play IW than MD. In fact, I rather pay for IW than paying for MD.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels ruined the original for me, I think.

It depends on the game really. One of the biggest problems I have with RTS games is contrary to their namesake, there isn't much strategy in them. Usually whoever had the most tanks was the winner. Usually what happens in RTS games is you turtle behind defensive structures, build up your army while the enemy throws units against at your defenses, move out when enemy units are whittled down. This worked in Warcraft, Starcraft, CnC and KKND

I finished M.A.X 1 last month and was considerably impressed with it despite never having played it back in the day. I forget which mission it was but it was one where you were attacked by alien aircraft early in the game. Right off the bat, you had to figure out where to build AA turrets and where to place your starting AA units to fill in the cracks. The aircraft were coming from the north so i built defenses covering the north part of my base. When the enemy came, skirted around the defenses and started ruining my base from the east and west sides. When the attack came and my defenses were at least moderately competent, the alien aircraft started probing around the base looking for weaknesses. I was quite impressed when I saw this considering pretty much all strategy games I played before this one just blindly threw units into defensive structures.

Well my experience with TBS so far is Advance Wars, which is "pump out units to counter anything your foe can manage". It's a bit like Monopoly in that once you get close to victory you've pretty much won.

Really? Grim Dawn totally ruined Diablo 2 for me.

Grim Dawn has much better pacing, varied environments and a modern aesthetic (without that colourful D3 crap). I also like the crafting system, multi classing (and class synergies). Skills granted by items scale with your character level (big problem in D2), auto pickup of iron bits, potions and loot filtering. I'm sure there's more but those are just a few off the top of my head.

Xenonauts also ruined X-COM: Enemy Unknown for me. I liked Xenonauts aircraft and weapon upgrade progression a lot. The ability to conveniently configure a soldiers loadout, pistols and shotguns were great additions, tedious storeroom micromanagement was eliminated, more varied battlefields, air combat. I didn't pick up Xenonauts because I was afraid it wouldn't live up to EU, was I ever wrong there.

I would not say ruined but I don't like the modern takes on some stuff like JRPG and FPS arena shooters aka new unreal tournament with overheating guns... like really over heat my pulse gun you die!!!! >:)

How so? The lost levels were a bit harder than the originals but other than that, there wasn't much difference.

The only thing I can that comes closed to "ruined" for me is Morrowind. Playing it right after finishing Daggerfall was a bad idea. The new leveling system, less class options, and a bigger focus on overworld instead of half-hour to an hour long dungeon crawls combined with a slower walk speed and no horse or cart and what was the point.
Especially since approaching Morrowind like Dagerfall leaves you at level one doing fetch quest for hours. Sure not every quest needs to take place in a dungeon, but early Morrowind is like opposite Skyrim. Considering my backlog of RPGs and I might never find time for Morrowind.

Fallout New Vegas ruined FO3 for me. And fallout 4. Damn you, Obsidian!!!
