Fate-is-one-edge: Uplay functions as a "digital vault" of your purchases, it does not have a digital store funcion. All purchases providing Uplay keys are made from Ubisoft's web storefront.
Well, I installed the UPlay client (I had not re-installed it when I clean installed Windows on this PC half a year ago), and logged into my existing UPlay account, and I could obtain that AssChina game from within the client fine, with one or two clicks.

There were some extra hoops visiting the web page because I wanted to enable 2FA, but the game itself was obtained from within the client.

It is impossible to purchase a game through the Uplay client.
What did you do exactly?

Are you sure your information is up to date? At least now when I am logged into the UPlay client, there is a "Store" page there too from where you can add games to your cart etc. I haven't actually bought anything from there but at least to me it seems to work the same as e.g. the Store page on the Steam client. You pick items adding to your cart, go to the Checkout where it asks for billing information blaa blaa blaa. It never launches a web browser at that point.

Pretty much as soon as I logged in, there was an ad for that freebie so I clicked once or twice, after which it was in my account. Try it yourself.
Mister Stick, say hello to Mister Carrot.

Unfortunately no such advertisement appeared on my Uplay client when I installed it and neither could I find any announcement, concerning that offer on Uplay's newsfeed, or any other sales offer for that matter.
For me, I can only find it on the Ubistore webpage, as part of a special sales period.

If I remember correctly, there are two kinds of UPlay accounts. The first one is when you register an UPlay account on Ubisoft's store or the client. In this case you can buy games from within the client. The second one is when you buy a Ubisoft game on Steam which requires UPlay to run. You'll have to download UPlay and register an account, but you won't be able to buy anything from within the client. The store tab in the client only becomes visible once you buy something from Ubisoft's website (store.ubi.com).

Don't ask me why, but Ubisoft thought that'd be a good idea :/

That must be it then, since I got Uplay to run a Ubisoft game bought through Steam! Thanks for clarifying.
Indeed, Ubisoft has struck again....
