I found this quick info:

Remember you cannot cast MAGE spells while wearing armor.
This does not include Mage Robes.

Maybe that has something to do with your problem?

At least that's how it works in early DnD editions. Take Baldur's Gate for example.

You need robes or Elven chain mail.
