I've had this game on my Steam library since before the dawn of time and never played it. For some reason I decided to check it out now. It's way better than I expected.

Chrome is NOT a typical run-of-the-mill FPS and in a few ways it's ahead of it's time.

You can clearly see some inspiration from Looking Glass Studio's classics, including a pre-mission load out screen very similar to Thief and controls that are very reminiscent of Deus Ex. The open exploration level design also reminds me of Deus Ex, but it's large outdoor areas give Chrome a Far Cry flavor.

The main character has Crysis-style augments you can use for a limited time - run faster, zoom aim with all weapons, etc. This game was out 4 years earlier, so right way to say it would probably be that Crysis has Chrome-style augments.

Of course it's not all perfect. The AI is nasty, medium difficulty is brutal and I've seen people say in the hardest difficulty the enemies are basically aim bots. Still, there are 5 difficulty options so that's not as big a deal as it could be.

The story is typical late 90s, early 2000s videogame trash nonsense. At least the main character is voiced by John St. John doing a just slightly more subtle Duke voice.

The Community Wishlist entries for this game are unfortunately a mess. 8 entries between Chrome, the expansion Chrome Specforce, pleas for both and a mysterious Chrome 2 which may be referencing Specforce or the cancelled sequel, who knows.

There are many Techland games here and both them and GOG being from Poland could facilitate things. Show this game some love!

They aren't bad, especially considering that there are much worse (and lazy) FPS titles out there. They got pulled from sale on Steam, what, 5+ years ago? Probably for some good reason, but it would be nice to see them sold somewhere again in the future.

(I plopped in a few votes on the wishlists, save for Chrome 2 and the misspelled SpecForce entry)

There are plenty of good old games like that where a few people know of them. That disappear for some reason.
Maybe the game fell down the Chromewell.......
Funhaus / Inside-Gaming popularized some janky fps games like Chaser, Ubersoldier, and Chrome.

I wouldn't mind seeing it here; it'd be helpful if there was an easy way to contact Techland but there doesn't seem to be, maybe could try http://games.support.techland.pl/en/support/tickets/new
Aww man, the memories. Chrome was the first PC game I purchased, shortly after my parents bought me a PC in 2004 (I was just 11 y.o. back then). I have the disc version witch in my country at that time came as a bundle together with a Tech & PC News magazine.

samuraigaiden:
I enjoyed Chrome and Specforce too when I played them a few years ago. Far better than Halo, released in the same time and with the same atmosphere.

Did you try the unofficial patch here which add new features but keep the gameplay untouched ?

Never tried Chrome, but I guess it would be good idea - since I extremely enjoyed all Techland's games from Call of Juarez series (first, Bound in Blood and Gunslinger), despite the fact that I never was the fan of wild west. Same thing for Dead Island and Dying Light.

Would be great if Chrome will come one day to GOG's offer, since we've got here already a couple of Techland games.

I seem to remember that the enemies felt like that on other difficulties too, sneaking through a forest towards a base required using the binoculars to spot the enemies outside their detection range through the foliage and then spent half of your ammo trying to snap shot them through that foliage to have any change to not get shot multiple times before you could actually see them.

It also bloated the Windows registry with paths to individual texture files or something like that which made me to refuse to continue trying to finish the game on my next computer.

But I wouldn't mind buying the game again from GOG as long as they get someone to figure out how that registry bloat can be moved into the installation folder where it belongs to!

I played it too back in the day and remember it fondly. I'm still surprised it hasn't showed up here after all the Call of Juarez titles we've been getting.

Yes, I'm using that patch. It's just a big visual fidelity upgrade - more resolution options, better draw distance, etc. The game looks gorgeous despite it's age.

The AI aims too well but behaves quite dumb. As far as I can tell, the best strategy is to dash between cover points and get close enough to avoid wasting all your bullets. It becomes easier to do once you get the speed augment.

The game's biggest problem IMO is the default keyboard settings. Not only are some controls mapped like a flight sim from the early 90s (I for inventory, M for map, etc.) but the game doesn't map the peek right / peek left commands to anything. The game became 100% more fun after I properly mapped those and the prone and crouch toggle buttons.

Didn't know about the registry thing. That sucks.
Chrome is a pretty good game IMO, huge outdoor levels where you can tackle the mission pretty much anyway you want which puts it already head and shoulders above all the linear Halflife clones of the day.
If it got more budget to make the story, AI and graphics better and most importantly more marketingmuscle behind it, it would have been one of the biggest shooters in its time.

There was even talk about a sequel (not Specforce) but nothing came of it and Techland went on to make Dead Island instead.
Gentelmens, I agree that everyone would gladly see Chrome and Chrome: Specforce in GoG.com
Unfortunely, we are missing one critical component to achive these.
Do you "remember" Jazz Jackrabbit" relese?

On october 26, 2017 user Darkhow, in quite bad manner, was whining about need of adding games with titular green rabbit here.
Link below:
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/how_to_convince_darkhog_to_buy_games_on_gog

And what happend month later? Games appeared exclusively on GoG.
Link below:
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/release_jazz_jackrabbit_jazz_jackrabbit_2_complete_collection_eccc3

As everyone can celary see, these are scientific historical data.
So, we need to convince this lunatic with magic abilities to our case, so when he willstart whining again, by some hocus-pocus, abracadabra presto chango Chrome and Chrome: SpecForce will end up here.

Ok,my idea is a nonsense, but if everything else fail it'll be worth trying.
Best regards
Mateuszy
