Does anyone happen to know what would cause my computer to have a lot of difficulty running programs? I mean if I open an executable file, I get a message that asks me if I want to run the program (I'd like to be able to disable that message btw!), but sometimes the message doesn't appear for a few seconds, or a few minutes, or EVER, depending on which program I try to run. And if it never appears then I just can't use that program.

The computer is several years old and running Windows Vista (fortunately it's not the computer that I use for playing games), but still it should be able to run things or at least ATTEMPT to do so rather than IGNORING my commands! Even if I run as the administrator it doesn't do any better!

You're presumably talking about User Account Control which yes, can be shut off. Mind you that it's actually a good thing and keeps nasty software from doing nasty things and it's highly recommended to keep it on. It has saved me from installing malware on numerous occasions. I guess you may want to briefly shut it off just to confirm that your issue is actually related to this or just get some stuff done.

Anyway, you should google for reasons why the UAC prompt may take long to appear or why confirming the prompt may still keep software from running. I did a brief search and stumbled upon numerous possible reasons but don't know which ones are most likely and which solutions are most likely to work for you.

Well thanks, and at least now I know what the thing's called so it'll be easier to figure out.
