Maighstir: "They" is, in fact, the correct English way to refer to any arbitrary person without specifying gender. "It" implies that they're not a person at all.
Which is fine until you start getting into reflexive forms in English. Then it becomes tricky. It's a shame that the English language doesn't have a neutral form like the German "man" or the French "on" the Finnish "hän". English does have the form "one", but you're likely to have the piss taken out of you in the UK if you use it in any way other than sarcasm. One is not amused.
