Hi.

Looking for the original Black Mesa Source mod (not the new, paid one) to download and install. The only place I can find it is moddb.com, but they decided to make a mystery out of how to open the two archive files that make up the download.

Is there another legit source for this mod?

Thx.

Did you try(if you have it installed) steam? If not there, someone here might know or know how to extract those archives on moddb.

I'll guess its this mod ? https://www.moddb.com/mods/black-mesa
The files have been split using a program like HJSplit.

So when you use an archiver that can't join these files automatically you have to merge them
first just make sure both files are in one place and have the .001 and 002. ending.
https://hjsplit.en.softonic.com/

7-Zip can automatically join these files and you can extract them like every other archive.

There are a bunch of German websites where you can download it, like here for example: https://www.chip.de/downloads/Black-Mesa_57528457.html

If you manage to get it working I hope you have better luck than me

What prison level?

Anyway, when I first played it in 2013 the only issue I had was that the very last fight (right before you would get to Xen) was almost unplayable due to performance issues. Interestingly, when the last two chapters where released as beta version on Steam a few months ago I ran into the same issue in a similar fight with alien controllers. They seem to have fixed it since then, but I'm not entirely sure as I played the last part on a new laptop with much better hardware.

The one after that enemy hides in the sand, that detect movement so you have to jump from rock to rock, then you storm enemy site (which I remember as the prison). After that you go to something looks like a big water drainage exit. That's where my game keep crashing, in front of that drainage

That sounds alot like Half-Life 2 not Black Mesa Source (which is a remake of Half-Life 1 using the Half-Life 2 engine.)

Now that you said that I probably remember the prison wrong.

But I'm sure I'm not wrong about that big entrance where the game crashes. It was after a short climb

Lemme guess.....was it a cliff side climb, then a bunch of sand covered areas with those tentacles that kill the player quickly when they sense the player? I think I sort of know what you mean.

I think you got it. I knew it was sandy area. That's probably why I mistakenly remember the one from hl2

No that area is from HL1, and likely is in the black mesa mod as well.....I don't think it was a prison, though....I think it was more an army staging area for the invasion counter attack/etc.
Thanks all, and to Pherim for the link.

I got it downloaded but couldn't get it to work, then steam made some skins not work in another game for some reason, then it wanted the internet.. I finally just deleted steam and everything associated with it. To heck with all this crap and them. Bunch of scum more interested in running you like an ID card than letting you actually play games.

I sincerely doubt the mod was the source of these problems.

HL2 can be played without Steam. Does the mod really add a layer of DRM?
