chevkoch: After seeing the thread title, I came in here with the intention to post a recommendation for their stuff. Perfect for pen & paper RPG sessions (Cthulhu, Dark Sci-Fi etc.)
even better for painting from an abstract base!

vv221: Half the soundtrack is by Jeremy Soule, and the other half by our beloved Mark Morgan!

I’ve yet to play the game actually, I got it when GOG offered it for free not so long ago, but I listened to the Mark Morgan’s part of the soundtrack in a loop for days ;)

EDIT: You can remove it from your wishlist already, just check your chat!

All these recommendations look great! Keep 'em coming!

Also, I thought I would stop by and post a few nice albums for some other folks.

Carbon Based Lifeforms - Interloper
Infinity Shred - Sanctuary
Tycho - Awake
The music from the Little Big Adventure games is fantastic. Here is the main theme. There are lots more and they are available here on gog. :)

Deus Ex also has good music for playing in the background while working/studying. Also available on gog.

This experimental album by Omar Rodriguez Lopez and John Frusciante is also nice for this purpose.

NoNewTaleToTell: Hate to be tacky but check out my music, specifically A Beginning. It's atmospheric soundscapes with a focus on being calm and easy to relax and mellow out to. pressler.bandcamp.com

If you want a download code just let me know!

tinyE: Should we be taking music advice from someone who's avatar is "Smell the Glove"? :P
Well see...my musical taste go up to eleven...yours just goes up to ten so my musical taste is...ya know...one better.
If you don't mind some vocals and a mix of tension and deep melancholy in your atmosphere, I highly recommend the band Lunatic Soul.

Lunatic Soul - Sky Drawn in Crayon
Lunatic Soul - the in-between kingdom
Lunatic Soul - The Final Truth

I could also recommend the band Arcana:

Arcana - In Remembrance
Arcana - Amber
Arcana - Song of the Dead Sun

I would also recommend the soundtrack to the GameCube game Eternal Darkness.

Personally I like a mix of classical music to play when I'm writing. I also had a great Celtic sounds cd but have misplaced it. Like others have mentioned a compilation of movie soundtracks are also a great option.

astroclay: I'm looking for some nice music to play in the background while I do my work.
YouTube has a whole bunch of ambient mixes and the like. Honestly, you might be best off just going there and checking out some of the sets. A few of them are pieced together pretty well, and give two to five hours of relaxing music. No harm in letting someone else do the heavy lifting for you.

For greater specificity, I'd recommend some Balearic trance, like Chicane's earlier stuff (Far From the Maddening Crowd and Behind the Sun being the two I can put on shuffle/repeat and listen to all day). If you'd rather stay away from electronic music, then grab the Brandenburg Concerti by Bach, throw in some Handel (Water and Fireworks music, at least) and maybe some neoclassical like Aaron Copland (Appalachian Spring is a great place to start) or John Williams (really anything he's written since Fiddler on the Roof).
Lights & Motion - The Spectacular Quiet

Lights & Motion - Reborn

You can buy the album for whatever price you want it to be.
