As a fan of older crpgs (late 90s, early 2000s), these games look interesting, but I just don't feel too compelled to play them. Which games from this list are still worth playing? I'm looking more at story and writing rather than gameplay and mechanics as I'm sure they have been done better in a later game. I'd appreciate honesty over nostalgia because rpgs require a heavy time investment I'm not willing to put into a boring title (I'm looking at you M&M 3 & 4). Here's the list.

- Wizardry Series
- Stonekeep
- Realms of Arkania Series
- Ishar 3
- Anvil of Dawn
- Dragon Wars
- Robinson's Requiem
- Albion
- Challenge of the Five Realms

I love a lot of the older cRPGs, but I'll be honest that I'm one of those players who has a REALLY hard time seeing beyond the old graphics of the time. Of the ones on your list, I probably spent the most time on Wizardry 8 and Dragon Wars, both of which I loved. If you can get past the dated graphics, I'd vote for those two (with Wizardry 8 being the better of the two I listed).

I just purchased Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition (both I and II) and plan on enjoying those titles... I would say again, but I honestly don't remember ANY of the original BG, and I never did play BGII the first time around.

If you do pursue any from your list, and enjoy them, please post a follow-up since I'm sure there are others besides myself who are curious about them still holding up today.

stonekeep, anvil of dawn are worth playing. I still play them both. Realms of Arkania is difficult because of the irregular control scheme. They remade the first one and it is fantastic. But they never did the other 2 that I am aware (I haven't checked on this recently and have no inclination to right this second). I'm not sure about the others. I either haven't played them recently or at all. I'm sure dtgreene will extoll the virtues of the Wizardry games though; they seem to be favorites of hers.

Wizardry, Arkania and Dragon wars, my god yes they're worth playing, I love all of those games still.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. In particular, I think it would be hard to find a game with a growth system better than the one used in Wizardry 8.

Also, turn based combat, which is featured in many of those games, just isn't done much these days.

I'm TERRIBLE at a lot of the real-time strategy games, and I wish there were more turn-based options in a lot of the newer games.
Yet another opportunity to talk up Dragon Wars.

The interface has aged very badly... it's not 1989 anymore... and modern users will find it very clunky...

But the combat is truly fun and the story is pretty unique.

Without too many spoilers - you start out trapped in a prison city. There are about half a dozen ways to get out - can you find them all? Can you find the one that leads to a unique dungeon you won't see in the game otherwise?

There are three - count them THREE - different cities on the overland map you can permanently destroy if you mess up. Doing so isn't game-breaking, but it changes the way you have to play - and on your first run-through you'll probably destroy at least one, if not all.

There are tons of hidden bits of story and lore everywhere. Impressive for 1989 when most of your text had to be read from a paragraph book to save space on the 5.25" floppies.

One of the best CRPGs ever. I've played the whole thing several times.

Realms of Arkania Series

I haven't played a newer game like Realms of Arkania that is better than RoA. The remake is junk. It take a little while to figure it out, but it was worth it to me. That's the only one on the list where I think nothing newer has been made that's better.

What I love about RoA is that it makes you prepare for travels and encounters while you travel can really affect your party. It's not a perfect game or even near it, but nobody has made the feeling better than that game to me. If you want to prep winter gear and gather food together to go on an RPG journey, then it would be a good game for you. If that sounds horrible, then move on. Nothing more to see here.

thanks for that, I will likely actually fire it up one of these days and give a whirl because of this

Thank you all for the replies, I always figured these games were good, I'll have to try them now and see for myself, I probably won't complete any of them any time soon though (too many games to play).
