I created a thread about a similar topic a while ago:
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/mac_users_will_soon_not_be_able_to_play_old_games_anymore/page1

See also (for some more recent threads):

My understanding (which could be wrong) is that:

64-bit games which run natively on Mac will continue to work.

However, games which are 32-bit, or any game which uses WINE (for Windows games) or Boxer (for DOS games) will not work as they currently stand (I'm not sure about SCUMMVM one way or the other). This is because both WINE and Boxer are currently 32-bit. Even if WINE gets a 64-bit version for Mac, it will still only be able to run 64-bit windows games, not 32-bit Windows games. There is an (unofficial?) 64-bit version of DOSBox for MacOS, so if Boxer gets updated to 64-bit as well then it should work.

Dual boot, whether you choose Linux or Windows is your choice. There are Linux versions that look a lot like OSX.
very comprehensive reply, thank you.
Dark times ahead :-( It might be wise to keep a vm with HighSierra.
