All Ryzen support ECC, it's up to the MB manufacturer to implement support though, and few have.

It's unlikely that Ryzen Pro will overclock much if any better, their (well, Global Foundries' since AMD doesn't own the plants any more) current fabrication process is designed mostly for mobile type chips with low frequency and low power draw, they just plain and fundamental hit a voltage wall around 4GHz- which is why the far quicker stock 1800X only gets about 200MHz better total average overclock than a 1700 despite starting with a 700Mhz advantage. The Pros may well have better thermals getting up to that point, but won't get much higher. That has to wait for a new fabrication process...

Ryzen2 on the other hand should be on that new fab process and may well allow Kaby Lake style base and overclock frequencies. If they can get a decent IPC boost as well it should be a massive improvement overall.
Can anyone recommend a good motherboard that would work with Ryzen 1700X and G.SKILL Flare X RAM (in 3200 MHz mode).

I'm especially interested in good experience on Linux.

What size are you looking into for your motherboard?

note that there is still no support for thermal monitoring for Ryzen CPUs on Linux because AMD (so far) is refusing to release the necessary datasheets.

vidsgame: It seems though that my other options Intel or a lower end AMD are only going to get cheaper, until AMD comes out with the next big thing (Ryzen 2?) That motherboard alone is the price of all I would need to upgrade my system but I believe, right now the question to be asked is: Do I need to upgrade the system? I could play the games I could handle right now, very easily and then actually wait and see how the prices are when Threadripper comes out or even when Ryzen 2 comes out as I do have a backlog of games.

Then again I do have this case, so that might mean I could go for the cheaper CPU and Motherboard combo. It's an interesting thing to ponder about with new technology.
I'm with you on the "waiting game" before getting a Ryzen. My current system can run 80% of the games I own. And while I occasionally push my system to its limits, I don't think I will be too bothered with it during the next 12 months. So I'll wait, save some money, wait for the prices to come down, problems getting fixed and so on. Then, either I can get a full system for much less money or I can get a better Ryzen 2 machine for a similar amount of money. Either way, it is a win for me!

I must say I really like your case. How noisy are its fans? It came with no power supply, right? And it can take a DVD-ROM on the 5.25" bay on the top, if I understand it correctly.

I have a big case, so probably any desktop size would work.

Yeah, I saw that. And there is also this potentially very annoying issue: https://community.amd.com/message/2796982

This first board here is pretty much the best board you can get right now without any bios issues and crap like the high end asus one has. I currently use this board and its damn impressive. I will post under it some other great boards so you can see what your options are for the best reliable quality boards out now for the am4 platform.

Best board

Other great boards

first link here has bios update to support 3200+ ram support same with all other boards posted here with new amd updates for the chips to support higher clock rates.

Thanks! That does indeed look good. Special bonus points for it using Intel WiFi (works best on Linux). I have Ethernet connection now, but it's still good to have.

Very much I agree becuase I took a 3 weeks researching every motherboard and what they have and if it would be compatible with linux or as a hackintosh or windows base systems. so far these listed are the feature rich, tons of usb ports, stable rich bios drivers, consistant support for bios updates, superb build quality and mass weight support for heavy graphics cards. zotac amp as example haha. but yeah go with any and you should be happy from here on out and go check the sites as well cause I believe some have full ECC support for ram like gigabyte has on there 370x k7 series which is also a not bad board but does have some nice metal tension brackets on the pci lanes for bend safety.

so the 1700X is the cpu of choice you are going with? Don't go with the 1800X like I did haha lost 200 dollars over a .2mhz clock which is overlockable on the 1700X and better from what I was looking up :( I live I learn :P

About RAM. G.SKILL Flare X Series comes as a pair of 8 GB sticks, and supposed to run at 3200 MHz (14-14-14-34). That provides 16 GB. Would using two such sets to get 32 GB make the latency worse?

I don't really plan to overclock, and 1700X sounds like a good middle ground. I'll probably get this cooler for it:

I have 32gb two sets of these https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820236038 and so far I am not having any issues with latency and everything is running at it's best, Only had one crash due to overclocking ram to almost 4000mhz lol but you should not notice anything at all

and that cooler go with the nhd15 or the cooler master hyper 212 evo or highest of that model. the evo seems to be doing really well with the cpu if you do not overclock it for the price.

That's a really good question. It's actually quite quiet. My A/C and before that my Xbox 360 was louder than that, so maybe I'm used to it. I'll upload a video so you could judge for yourself and edit this post accordingly. I agree, I love the case. The smaller ones were more expensive or less ventilated but even though it's big, it is lightweight, mainly because of the lack of weighty hard drives.

My current system ran all of my games as well, but I've hit a snag even with my new GPU: 1060 6gb OC (previous one was a 750ti) because I want to run Witcher 3 on 60 fps on only 1080p and to do that I'm debating getting an overhaul which might require both a new CPU or a GPU or both. I'm still trying to figure out what I need to accomplish those settings but all my other games run perfectly.

Therefore, I might hold off but while I do I was trying to figure out the best path of upgrading with minimal damage to my wallet. Haha.

Edit: Correct, it comes with no power supply and yes, it does have a bay for a CD-ROM/DVD drive.

From what I've read, Ryzen benefits from low RAM latency, so something with CAS Latency 14 will make data transfer between cores the fastest.

Double fan looks like an overkill since I'm not planning to overclock. Or you expect single not to be enough?

at stock I get full load around 70 with the h80i with 2 fans but never tested the the other 2 yet but single fan on an 8 core is a bad idea right from the start, Stick with 2 fan high end cooling like those 2 and you should be fine, Go read some forums up on it and see what others are using on it. cause I am stuck with the corsair water cooling.

Thanks, I'll do some research on it.
