LOL! Masklin2, I've had BG1 in my possession for 6yrs now, BG2 for 7.5yrs now, and I've bought no less than 10 games since I've been on gog.com (2 of which are copies of BG1 & 2!), and BG1 will yet still be the game I play next after my current Planescape: Torment run is over! So yeah, unless you either hate or feel neutral towards the BG series, trust me, you'll be back to play it - especially once you familiarize yourself w/the BG modding community.
As for feeling bad when removing party members, don't. They *want* you to feel bad, w/the exception of Xan, of course, as he's doomed no matter what his situation is.
Simply roleplay that you tell those ex-party members that they are liabilities regarding your goals, which is a nice way of saying that they'll most likely die if they choose to travel with you still. Thus they're better off not adventuring with you.
Or juss eliminate them b/c you don't like their attitude, alignment, or how they go about their profession, and how it conflicts w/the rest of the party you have.
Edit: And regarding BG1, among all joinable NPC's, who truly belongs with your PC other than Imoen (grew up w/PC), Jahiera & Khalid (both swore to Gorion to protect PC), and Minsc & Dynahier (indebted to PC for risking his/her life to save Dynahier)? You can obviously roleplay otherwise to make your story fit to bring in others, but as it stands, no one has more claim than those I mentioned to adventure w/the protagonist. Rather, other joinable NPC's reasons for staying would all come off as pretentious in comparison, save for a few like Kivan, Yeslick, etc. :o)
