Both of the Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition 1 and 2 when installed recently (2017-06-11) where missing the OpenAL32.dll causing them crash on launch. I fixed it by getting a copy of OpenAL32.dll from another game in my steam Library, this file should be installed with the game hopefully this will be fixed soon.

In case people are encountering this problem the games that I know have OpenAL32.dll from steam are The Binding of Issac Rebirth, Mirrors Edge, Jedi Academy and Jedi Outcast, there are probably more but these are the only ones I had installed.

To find these I just used the windows fill explorer search in my steam library.

An important thing to note is through the launcher this crash is slight and raises no errors but if you try and launch the game manually it gives you an error stating OpenAl dll is missing.

OpenAL is a cross platform sound system API. Beamdog themselves have provided a link for an OpenAL installer, in case it is not installed on your system and you get this error (needs reinstalling -- don't take from other sources).
I know this is an old post but I just downloaded it and had the same issue. Thank you, I was able to copy the .dll from Dead Cells on Steam and it worked.

I don't know if this is a coincidence but I've been having more and more issues with GOG games not running or needing tech support before working, I'm starting to shift to buying more games on Steam just because I know they will work right. Hopefully GOG starts taking these issues seriously because I know they're losing sales from at least myself. I would rather support the DRM free model than Steam but you have to give me a working product.

Did any of you geniuses think to tell GOG there was a problem?

Just got this error as well (Jan 04, 2024). Other games have the same problem... GoG is hosting the installer for OpenAL:
