Hours and hours spent on this. Career mode, personalized pilots in your squadron. From what I recall good flight dynamics for the time and challenging. Love this game. Would buy it immediately from GOG even with newer pc titles out there.

Only got this one after it's sequel (SWOTL), but played it for long hours in the summer of 94, and after. Despite not having a long career mode (the game depicts the battle of britain, after all), the campaign mode was quite good for the time. As the other two games from the trio (Battle Hawks 1942, Their Finest Hour and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe), I would say the one of the short falls is the lack of aerial collisions.

Back in 1990 i was in high school and was obsessed with this game, on the Amiga. It formed my interest in WW2 history, and then... broader history in general. As well as flight sims. I actually had a roster of pilots all based off my school class and when they died i kinda felt it!

I was high in the sky defending a base from the Germans, we took out all the bombers and fighters but one. it was smoking, then banked, rolled twards the base and started climbing, it went super high up then Kmikazied the base, destroying it fully, and loosing me the base. i couldent catch him on the way down. I owe that pilot some payback!
The 3d experience so long ago was mind-blowing compared with arcade flight games prior. Amazing time in combat history to capture. Memorable fights that gave the feel of Star Wars space combat, as this era was their inspiration. What truly stunned me as to be able to control a 3d camera and be able to move it anywhere and look at anything from any angle. The world and events were real. AND the printed manual was astounding in the history and flavor it included.
Arcade enough to be fun, realistic enough to really evoke the period and the classic planes. Also, the only flight simulator where I could consistently land without crashing!

Freelancer
FreelancerEight hundred years prior to the start of our story, bitter conflict divided all of mankind. A handful of colonists struck out on their own to begin anew - far away from the Earth and its turmoil. Several ships were launched with enough equipment and supplies to give the hundreds onboard a fighting chance - but since the area around far-off Sirius had never been surveyed, no one really knew what to expect. What they found was a new frontier of free-flowing natural resources, unexplored territories, great wonders and lurking dangers. Each ship, representing the clusters of people and their earthly place of origin, settled into different parts of the galaxy pre-selected by their ship-board computer to give them the best chance of survival. Life was hard in the beginning, but over the 800 years the different colonies prospered and expanded their territories, claiming more and more systems for their own. Survival and propagation eventually led to growth and profit as each of the colonies developed specialties and fostered commerce. As the colonies grew and time passed their connections with their roots on Earth dwindled and they lost their memories of the conflicts of the past. Soon their attention was dominated by new, more immediate conflicts. Feelings of lost ancestral connection spurred anachronism in the look of the great cities, and created a somewhat distorted image of each colony's cultural heritage. In the ever-expanding outer edge of the territories, frontier lawlessness prevailed. The Houses: Each shipboard colony that left Earth carried some memory of its origins in its name. The Liberty carried Americans, The Bretonia flew from The United Kingdom and surrounding territory, The Kusari from Asia, and the Rheinland launched with Germanic cargo. As each ship settled and colonies began to expand, they knew little about each other and their advancing development. Finally, little by little, the individual colonies found each other and began to set up trade routes to link their systems for commerce and solidarity. Today, with each colony firmly rooted in its respective corner of the galaxy, the colonies rely heavily on each other for trade and industry but also compete for resources and new territories in the Border Worlds. The colonies mandate member governments in "The New Alliance" within the Sirius sector. To control conflicts, each colony has forged alliances and treaties with others as they have grown. Competition remains fierce, however. Struggles rage for supremacy in business, commerce, resources, power and control. There can be tenuous peace between colonies' political agendas, but the grabs for holdings constantly unsettle the volatile frontier.

OutpostIn the first part of the 21st century, scientists discovered a huge asteroid named Vulcan's Hammer headed straight for Earth. A single corporation decided the only way for survival was to colonize other worlds. One ship was launched and as it sat in orbit around Jupiter, Earth was no more. Now it is your task to seek out a new planet and repopulate it with human life. SimHealth
SimHealthSimHealth has a rather serious subject matter: the debate in the summer of 1994 over what kind of health care system the United States should have. The player gets the usual godlike power, being able to choose what proposals to adopt and even what assumptions should be in the underlying mathematical models (an especially good thing, since many of the models turned out to be so very wrong).
