Story:The Need for Speed series returns, this time reverting back to the 'chase' arcade experience instead of a racing simulation. Top speed racing is the name of the game, where you must outchase not just the opposing drivers, but the cops.
Choose from a selection of today's (and yesterday's) top sports cars, including the Ferrari F50, Porsche 911 and a range from the likes of Ford, Corvette, BMW, Lotus, Mercedes, Aston Martin, the McLaren F1 and a lot more.
The competitive race mode allows you to take on other drivers and beat them to the line. A selection of tracks allows you to not only dodge incoming traffic, but perform deadly jumps and stunts to receive points. These points, combined with the points recieved from your finishing position, can unlock new cars and tracks.
The Hot Pursuit mode combines all the major elements of the competitive mode with the chance to out run the cops. They will throw everything at you to try and stop you, including running you off the road, setting up road blocks and unleashing an attack helicopter equiped with missiles. "Need for Speed 3: Hot Pursuit" and "Need for Speed (6): Hot Pursuit 2" are, in my opinion, the best and defining Need for Speeds of the pre-Underground era.
Instead of the city-centric tuning-car fantasy of the later games, the early NfSs titles were all about racing with sports cars in exotic places, being chased by the police - or chasing others as the police.
As a result, is has a very different vibe, with a focus on more rural but very beautiful environments. There is a certain world-building "vibe" that got lost in the search for coolness/edgyness of the later titles.
It also feels a lot different - dare I say better - than the 2010 "Remake" of Hot Pursuit.
One of the defining games of my childhood - PLEASE bring it back, GOG.

The Black Box developed version released on PS2 is the superior version to bring to GoG. While the PC version had some extra tracks much of the game was inferior in comparison.
This game captured the sense of blasting down the road in an exotic car. I'll never forget bouncing off the revlimiter of 6th gear in the F50:NFS on Island Outskirts while running from the cops.
You were awarded points for tricks like catching air and defeating road blocks. Those points unlocked more cars. There's a campaign for both with and without cops. Although, just a duplicate for the most part.
I still fire up my PS2 periodically just to play this game.
I love the mood and aesthetic of the game. Soundtrack isn't super varied, but it goes so hard. I first played the PS2 version and was stunned by the graphical upgrade over NFS 3. The PC version was not as elegant as the PS2 one, but it still looked really good, and I enjoyed how it played. Spent a lot of hours on this one
When I had the chance to play this racing game on PC, it became one of my favorite. Music was awesome, don't know why, but for me it perfectly matched with the theme, had great fun with the various stages and cars and just couldn't pass on to newer ones, they didn't feel that charming.
After 'Street Rod', 'Lotus 3 UC' and 'Crazy Cars 3', this was another hit for me.
