I spent so much time when back from school on this game, it's really one of the best strategy game from that period. A real balance between the turn based management and real time battles, with each factions having a visual identity and historically accurate soldiers. I remember being very bad at it and would use the money code all the time, and still, i was terrible at fights even against average AI. But i'd be so glad if GoG could bring those eldest Total War games, with a patch for widescreen it would be perfect.

I spend countless hours in Medieval 2. Either alone or together with my brother playing singleplayer and feeling like two great tacticans. We never played multiplayer, but always singleplayer, as the most fun part of the game was to argue about how we should use each turn, what longterm strategies we could apply or to just view one of those epic movie-like siege battles Medieval 2 ist famous for. When we played together, we always felt about the game, like it was a good movie. Having extensive mods which add dozens of historical subfactions , Medieval 2 steel also told me more about heraldy of the European middle ages than I would imagined. To this day I cannot go into a castle in Germany, France or Italy, without noticing at least one or two coat of arms of a local nobility. Even when newer, more extensive entries in the Total War series released, none got me hooked like Medieval 2.

The best total war game ever made. Don't argue. What's not to love? The graphics the music the humor the strategy the mods. The only thing that annoys me is agent spam. But still a classic.

Star Command
Star CommandThe game plays in a distant future. Earth is a distant memory, having been destroyed long ago. The small human population is concentrated in a small portion of the galaxy, called "The Triangle" due to its form, and threatened from its neighbors: The Alpha border is plagued by pirates, recently united under a certain "Blackbeard", the Beta border is frequently ambushed by an intelligent insect-like alien race who is thought to plan an all-out war. The third border leads to largely unknown territory with space-faring robots of unclear origin. The only hope for mankind is the Star Command, the headquarter of military forces. You control a spaceship crew, trying to secure peace by completing missions issued by Star Command.

Star Raiders
Star RaidersStar Raiders is a first-person space combat simulator for the Atari 8-bit family of computers. It was written by Doug Neubauer, an Atari employee, and released as a cartridge by Atari in 1979. The game is considered the platform's killer app. It was later ported to the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, and Atari ST. The game simulates 3D space combat between the player's ship and an invading fleet of alien "Zylon" vessels. Star Raiders was distinctive for its graphics, which, in addition to various map and long range scan views, provided forward and aft first-person views, with movement conveyed by a streaming 3D starfield as the player engaged enemy spacecraft. While there had already been target-shooting games using the first person perspective (including 1978's Cosmic Conflict), Star Raiders had considerably higher quality visuals and more complex gameplay. It inspired imitators throughout the 1980s as well as later-generation space combat simulation games including Elite, Wing Commander, and Star Wars: X-Wing. In 2007, Star Raiders was included in a list of the 10 most important video games of all time, as compiled by Stanford University's History of Science and Technology Collections.

SkyGunner
SkyGunnerSkyGunner is a 3rd person flight combat game, with its emphasis on action. Players choose to take the role of either Ciel, Copain or Femme, each with their own campaign and unique flying abilities and special skill. Players can turn the plane's direction up, down, left and right, perform barrel rolls, use afterburners and breaking. Weaponry is handled by a complex system of targeting, with involves two types: "Look Targeting" and "Weapon Lock". Look Targeting simply assigns a particular enemy as the center of the camera and can be switched between at any time. The player must still maneuver near the enemy and target them with the cross hairs in order to fire on them. Depending on the secondary weapon selected, players can roll the cross hairs over the wing leader of an enemy group or the sequentially lead gun on a battleship, allowing the player to instantly target multiples from that group. The primary weapon of each airplane is a machine gun which fires straight ahead. More destructive secondary weapons are also available, and include Fireworks Missiles which create area explosions, Dog Missiles which slow and/or immobilize targets and Cross Missiles which stick to targets and need to be shot by a machine gun to detonate. Copain also has his own weapon, the Pumpkin Bomb which is a big destructive bomb. These secondary weapons are automatically replenished with the destruction of chains of enemies and/or combos. Chains/Combos are also the way to activate score multipliers, which affect the amount of money won in each mission. Ciel, Copain and Femme are continually in competition throughout the game and often bonuses (such as faster engines) are given to the character with the highest score in specific missions. Bonus scores are also awarded for specific mission events.
