Dune (1992)

by Cryo Interactive, Sold Out Software, The Hit Squad, Virgin Games, Virgin Interactive Entertainment
Genres:Adventure, Strategy, Real Time Strategy (RTS)
Themes:Science fiction
Game modes:Single player
Story:Dune is a 1992 video game, based upon Frank Herbert's science fiction novel of the same name. Developed by Cryo Interactive, is the first of the Dune computer games. Dune blended adventure with economic and military strategy, and is considered by many the most immersive Dune computer game. Loosely following the story of the novel, the game casts the player as Paul Atreides, with the ultimate goal of driving the Harkonnen from Planet Dune, while managing spice extraction, military, and later, ecology through the native Fremen tribes. As the player progresses, his troops are equipped with weapons from "crysknives" to atomics, tap into Paul's latent psychic powers, and get acquainted with such characters from the book as Chani and Liet-Kynes.Show more

Awesome game! One of a kind! But beware... if the game comes to GOG, both floppy and CD versions should be included. Why? Because the floppy version is better! The CD version adds two major changes : voice acting and pre-rendered 3D cutscenes. The voice acting is subpar and becomes quite annoying in the second half of the game, where the gameplay is more about managment than story (you'll here the same lines over and over again). The pre-rendered 3D cutscenes make the game dull. The 2D graphics were beautiful at the time and still are, the pre-rendered 3D was primitive and look dated today. The cutscene you'll see the most of is the ornithopter travel. In the floppy version the cutscene uses the game engine. As you travel, you'll see the desert take on various colors according to the day/night cycle. You'll see your destination on the horizon before reaching it or maybe spot a place that wasn't on your map. On the CD version, every time you take an orni, you'll see the same boring pre-rendered 3D cutscene. No shifting colors, nothing on the horizon, no surprises. Keep in mind that this is true of a lot of games that were originally released on floppy discs and saw a "hasty" re-release on CD with a bit of 3D thrown in because it was "the new trend".

I played this game for a lot hours in my childhood. I´ll wish this game come back with spanish (how I was playing) :D It would be a pleasure to have it available for current operating systems and with some support, it is about time that this jewel leaves the “abandonware”.

I still have my copy for the Sega CD. It's a great game and I love the voice acting on it. It's definitely a callback to the Lynch movie, but also works on its own. Unfortunately it's not always clear what to do next and a guide DEFINITELY helps.

One of the first games I ever played to the end. Fantastic sound track (which I have on CD too). I'm struggling to remember any details about the game itself other than really enjoying it. This would be a must for my steam deck should GOG be so kind as to make it available.

Dune (1992) was one of the first PC games I ever played, and it left a lasting impression on me. I actually watched the film only afterward, which led to several aha moments. However, knowing the film isn't necessary to enjoy the game. The gameplay was intuitive and engaging, making it easy to get immersed in the story. For its time, the graphics were remarkable, vividly bringing the desert world of Arrakis to life. However, what truly stood out to me was the soundtrack—experiencing it through my very first sound card was an unforgettable moment. Just incredible! It would be fantastic if the bundle also included the original soundtrack, as it played such a crucial role in creating the game's atmosphere.

From a time were games just appeared, someone got a hold on Dune. (And Dune II, about the same time), months before we saw it in store. It started a lifelong facination for this world, and led me to the movie, and the books. I remember getting the CD-ROM version, and the flight scenes through the desert blew my mind. Would love to re-play!

This is DUNE, the real deal, anything that came after didn't live up to the Dune universe. This is my favourite game from when I was a kid along with F-29 Retaliator

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake EaterMetal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the follow up to Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. It is the first prequel in the series, taking the series to the year 1964. The player takes the role as the series' original antagonist, Big Boss, then known as Naked Snake. MGS3 is the first game in the series to take place in a jungle. This unique setting created an opportunity for new mechanics. The player can adapt to the environment by swapping Snake's camouflage, hunt animals and gather plants for food. This iteration in the series introduced a new feature in which the player must apply medicine and perform medical procedures on Snake if he is damaged in combat. Apart from the survival themed features, the controls and gameplay of the game are very similar to Metal Gear Solid 2. Like other Metal Gear games, the focus is on stealth, but the player can go through the entire game like a shooter if they choose to. Throughout the game Snake acquires weapons of all types; non-lethal firearms, handguns, sniper rifles, machine guns, shotguns, sub-machine guns, and explosives. Metal Gear Solid 3 was the first game to implement the CQC (close quarters combat) system. CQC allowed Snake to beat enemies down to knock them out, or put them in a chokehold to knock them out, kill them, or and/or question them. Metal Gear Solid 3's health system required the player to occasionally pause the game and treat Snake's ailments. When Snake is shot, there is a chance that the bullet didn't pass through him, requiring the player to use a knife to remove the bullet, apply disinfectant, apply styptic and bandage the wound. This was done through a submenu in the pause screen. Other ailments the player must treat Snake for include: leeches, broken bones, burns, cut, arrow/bolts/needles, stomach sickness, colds, and food/venom poisoning. Adding to the survival elements of the game, Snake Eater lives up to its name by requiring the player to scavenge food for Snake. Under the life bar there is stamina bar. If Snake does not eat any food the bar depletes, causing various effects. When the stamina bar is low, the player's ability to aim is severely handicapped, Snake's hands will shake in the first person aiming mode. Just like real life, Snake's stomach can also rumble, enemy soldiers can hear this, and will be alerted to Snake's presence.
