by Hyperion Entertainment, Volition, Haage & Partner, Interplay Entertainment
Genres:Simulator
Themes:Action, Science fiction
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer
Story:The heartless Shivans emerged through subspace near Earth, harboring technology light years ahead of anything seen before. They made no attempt to communicate. They did not respond to your heralds. They simply attacked and destroyed everything in their path. As a pilot for the Galactic Terran Alliance (GTA) you are no stranger to war. But when racing through space to engage your new enemy for the first time, you sense something different. Suddenly, darkness blankets your craft. Your stomach sinks as your eyes pan across the Shivan flagship's massive body. Then it begins. Swarms of fighters pour from the belly of the flagship and scream towards you. You are about to discover everything you thought you knew about space combat just changed.Show more

The combat system was fantastic. You could target the target of your current target to coordinate strikes, the battle ships were huge for the time, and it felt like an updated x-wing. We played this for hours multiplayer and had a blast.

Amazingly in-depth in a timeless manner, Descent: Freespace has been a regularly played game in my collection since 1999. This game, its sequel Freespace 2, and the Open Source Project led me to a career in the tech industry, and left me with a lifelong love for space and gaming!
First true game I ever played. Glorious combat, fantastic story and huge capital ships. This should land in Preservation Program since original studio is dead. No hope for remakes or remasters or any kind of closure. This should be kept alive.

Even today there does not exist any game(except for Freespace 2) which gives you this feeling of dogfights between gigantic battleships hurling thousands of rockets, lasers and beams at eachother

Elite
EliteElite is a space trading video game, written and developed by David Braben and Ian Bell and originally published by Acornsoft for the BBC Micro and Acorn Electron computers in September 1984. Elite's open-ended game model, and revolutionary 3D graphics led to it being ported to virtually every contemporary home computer system, and earned it a place as a classic and a genre maker in gaming history. The game's title derives from one of the player's goals of raising their combat rating to the exalted heights of "Elite". Elite was one of the first home computer games to use wire-frame 3D graphics with hidden line removal. It added graphics and twitch gameplay aspects to the genre established by the 1974 game Star Trader. Another novelty was the inclusion of The Dark Wheel, a novella by Robert Holdstock which gave players insight into the moral and legal codes to which they might aspire.

Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator: WWII Europe Series
Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator: WWII Europe SeriesMicrosoft's flight simulators aimed realistically portray life as a commercial pilot for over a decade before combat was added. In this offshoot (pardon the pun) of the series, you are a combat pilot during World War II, for either the RAF, USAAF or Luftwaffe. Eight different planes and the battered cities of Berlin, Paris and London are incorporated. Full cockpit designs and damage models are featured - watch for engine smoke and explosion debris. There is a full campaign mode, which takes in the Battle of Britain, defending London during the Blitz, and finishing the job started on D-Day by pummeling ground targets. You can also play individual missions or fly freely. Online multiplayer options allow you to take this worldwide fight around the real world.

Frontier: Elite II
Frontier: Elite IIFrontier: Elite 2 is, of course, the sequel to Elite and it continues in much the same way. You have a ship and limited funds, and nowhere to go but out into space. Trade, fight, hunt criminals, work for the various governments, anything goes in Frontier. There are few, if any, limits on what you can do or where you can go. And Frontier's universe (with approx. 100,000,000,000 planets and moons) is so big you'll never see the end of it.
