The Settlers (1993)

by Blue Byte Software, SSI (Strategic Simulations, Inc.)
Genres:Strategy, Simulator
Themes:Historical
Game modes:Single player, Multiplayer, Split screen
Story:The goal of this game is to build a prosperous and well organized city and to gain control of enemy cities. This might initially seem simple to do, but in reality it is much more complex. If you consider all the game's problems inversely, that is from the end of the game first, you will understand better. In order to conquer the enemy castles, you will need many knights. To keep their morale up, you will need gold, and for the weapons you will need iron and coal. These raw materials are found in mines. The mines must be provided with food and the raw materials must be melted in a foundry. The food supply is ensured by the fishermen and the farmers, but they need tools, as do all other workers. These tools are made by smiths. To build huts, houses, castles you will need construction materials and workers...Show more

There's no game quite like the original The Settlers. It has all the tactical deepness of later real-time strategy games but it covers them over with a cute, cartoony veneer that makes it endlessly appealing. Add in the fact that logistics not only work in this game but can actually be used against your opponent and you've got a classic that has yet to be beaten.

I can play this game an entire day, non stop. His design impacts me and hsi gameplay was different everytime. When I understand how to play I can stop playing it.
Spent quite a lot of hours playing, once you get hooked not easy to leave. It was probably my most expensive game... Some of the missions are a bit tricky initially, as you have to be quick, or just find out what the enemy is up to. Wish I had DOSBox with fast-forward capabilities around 1994. This being the first in the series, it really HAS to be added and preserved.

ParaWorld
ParaWorldThe game-concept is similar to "Age of Empires", which is a real-time strategy game. ParaWorld features food, wood, and stone as resources. Food can be picked from bushes, hunted from animals, fished from the sea, or farmed. Stone is located in limited deposits, and wood, cut from trees, is generally scattered throughout a map. Battles can occur on both land and sea. The story takes place in a parallel dimension, where prehistoric life thrives alongside diverse human civilizations that are not technologically advanced. As a result, dinosaurs take the place of traditional wildlife and livestock, though some of the dinosaurs in-game are highly stylized and not necessarily scientifically accurate. Wild-living dinosaurs can be hunted for food, though some are of dangerous and aggressive species and will attack any player unit that wanders too close. Other prehistoric creatures make an appearance as well, for example woolly mammoths are used where other games might feature elephants. Players advance through epochs in order to unlock new technologies and upgrades.
