Story:Shining Force is a turn-based tactical RPG. Battles take place in square grids, and each unit occupies 1 square. Units can belong to one of two sides: allies (controlled by the player) or enemies (controlled by the computer AI). Each unit can move up to a fixed amount of squares along the battlefield, determined by its Move statistic. Depending on its location relative to enemies and to allies, a unit also has the option to attack, cast a spell, use an item, search (if adjacent to a treasure chest), or stay and do nothing, all of which end the unit's turn. Some commands, such as equipping or dropping items, don't count as actions, and the character's turn is able to continue. The order of the turns is determined by the unit's agility score and a random seed. Units can use offensive actions, such as physical attacks or offensive magic, only on units belonging to the other side and can use supportive actions, such as healing magic, stat-enhancing magic, and items, only on units belonging to the same side.Show more

When I was a child in the early 2000s, I was spoiled with games on CD every holiday - I couldn't get enough of them. One of the games I had was the Sega Smash Pack 2 which was my first real, consistent exposure to games from the previous generation - and I had a blast. I liked Kid Chameleon and I really liked Comix Zone, but Shining Force stood out to me for years and years after. The music, the graphics, the roleplay aspect of assembling your party, and the challenging and rewarding fights all surprise me even to this day every time I fire the game up. My hope is that if this game came out on GOG, maybe the next generation of people will get to make that same connection back to the history of early 90s gaming like I did and make some good memories to stay with them forever.
Me and my childhood best friends would rent a Shining Force game from the local shop and spend the whole weekend playing and passing the controller around. Great times, great memories!
Rented this game on a whim. I was thirsting for good rpgs and the description/box art hit all the right notes.
I struggled with it at first, as it wasn't like any rpg I have ever played, but once I understood the mechanics I fell hard in love with it. I loved the characters, the strategy, and the unique approach to combat.
I want this game on GOG because it represents an important step in tactical RPGs and because it's a timeless classic. The entire series should be there.
It was my first RPG game growing up. I first played it when I got the Sega Genesis emulator with all the old games. And it's my favorite of the Shining Force series.

When times are rough, the American people rely on their army. And when times are rough, the American army relies on their special forces. A small group of highly trained, superbly skilled, well-armed and clean-shaven elite soldiers boldly go where no man has gone before. At least no honest man.
Special Forces let's you control a team of four in a top-down view and setting reminiscent of Jagged Alliance, only that the time ticks continuously. Consequently, strategy and stealth stand back behind Gauntlet-style arcade action. Moving alone or in squad formation, you shoot enemy soldiers and blow up bunkers, always quick to go in and quicker yet to go out. Goals vary from deploying laser targeting systems for air strikes to assassinations to rescue missions; some assignments take place under cover of darkness, with night vision systems coloring the landscape a gloomy green.
16 missions take you to four different parts of the world, from the terrorist's arctic ice to the drug cartel's native jungle. Before hopping into the helicopter, you may choose four soldiers out of eight, each with different special abilities, and equip each one. Reading the text briefings is crucial, as the game won't warn you if you go on a bombing raid without any explosives. Also, the higher the difficulty level you choose, the less accurate is the info that you get on your targets, so you'll have to search the area. Luckily, a detailed map provides an overview. As enemies respawn and ammo depletes, some men may not make it back. Those who do can be awarded medals and promotions, which will boost their morale and increase their stats.Action
