InuYasha: The Secret of the Cursed Mask

InuYasha: The Secret of the Cursed Mask (2004)

by Quintet, Bandai
Genres:Role-playing (RPG), Adventure, Visual Novel
Themes:Action, Fantasy
Game modes:Single player
Story:Inuyasha: The Secret of the Cursed Mask is based on an anime series of the same name. You can play either as a teenager boy or a teenager girl, named by the player. The two scenarios are very similar and basically follow the same story: you live in modern-day Tokyo and one day discover a strange symbol in an old storehouse. As a result, you are transported to medieval Japan. You encounter the half-demon Inuyasha, who introduces you to Kagome Higurashi, the heroine of the anime series. Together you embark on a journey to retrieve scattered pieces of the Sacred Jewel and to find a way to get back home. This is a fairly traditional Japanese-style RPG with random encounters and turn-based combat viewed from over-the-shoulder perspective. You can attack physically, use special techniques, and power up to combo attacks with multiple characters.Show more

Playing Inuyasha and the Secret of the Cursed Mask turned out to be a surprisingly positive experience for me, not only because I enjoyed it, but also because it helped me appreciate myself and my freinds a little more. What stood out to me the most was the way the game was designed to support individuals who struggle with communication and social interaction, including those with special needs. The gameplay actively encourages players to engage with various characters, fostering dialogue and interpersonal exchanges that, while taking place in a virtual setting, can serve as a valuable practice tool for real-life social interactions. By immersing players in conversations and decision-making processes, the game creates a safe and supportive environment for developing communication skills, making it an effective and enjoyable way to build confidence in social situations.
I first played this game for the PS2 around late-2004 to early-2005, pretty shortly after its North American release. At the time, I was pretty big into the InuYasha anime and when I saw this game sitting on the shelf of a video rental store, I didn't hesitate to rent it and see what it was like. While the gameplay is pretty mediocre, the story is absolutely stellar in regards to its relation to the anime and, in my personal opinion, is even superior to the source material's story. Sadly the game wasn't around long, as it went out of production almost a year after its release, likely due to poor sales. As a result, the vast majority of InuYasha fans don't even know this game exists. And word of mouth can only do so much. So if this game were able to come to GOG, and especially if they were somehow able to get both the English and Japanese versions (the Japanese version does have some content that was cut and changed for the English release), it would give this game new life and another chance for the fandom to more easily find it and try it for themselves.

Phantom Brave
Phantom BravePhantom Brave is a strategy RPG which takes place in the world of Ivoire. Ivoire consists of vast seas and numerous islands; it used to be a peaceful place, but an ancient (and powerful) force is now threatening life in the various lands. The character you control in the game is Marona, a 13 year old orphaned girl. Marona has the ability to communicate with phantoms, an ability that brings a lot of resentment from other people but will help her to head out into the world and solve the problems that are occurring. A phantom known as Ash acts as Marona's guardian; as the game progresses, other phantoms will join your party, each of which have different capabilities. The game features a turn based combat system. During battles, Marona is able to attack enemies by herself, and she can also summon phantoms in her party to help out. To summon phantoms, you will need to confine them to an object on the screen (such as a rock or tree). Once confined to an object, you will then be able to control the phantom in battle, though phantoms only remain controllable for a limited number of turns. The object you confine a phantom to will affect it's abilities; for example, a rock may make a phantom stronger but move slower. By defeating enemies in battle you earn experience points allowing to level up and become more powerful.

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom HourglassThe Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is the first Zelda game for the Nintendo DS and a direct sequel to The Wind Waker. The art direction is the same cel-shaded style as the Wind Waker but is displayed from a classic top-down perspective. The gameplay is structured similarly to other games in the series and is divided into two major gameplay sections: sailing between islands and exploring the islands and their dungeons on foot. The touch screen is used to make Link move and attack instead of buttons, you can also make notes of secret treasures and items on the map simply by writing them down. The game received critical acclaim from reviewers, who agreed that the game was a worthy sequel to The Wind Waker.
