Deep Fear

Deep Fear (1998)

by Sega CS2 R&D, System Sacom, Sega
Genres:Adventure
Themes:Action, Horror
Story:All contact is lost with a submarine on a routine mission which then crashes into an underwater facility. The occupants of the underwater facility are ordered to board the submarine and find out what went wrong. On board the vessel, strange things are happening which are taking control of the crew. The crew are mutating due to an alien parasite and members of the search team have to figure out what is happening and how to stop it! The game is played via a third person view which is just behind the character and you look over his shoulder. The game is based underwater in a submarine so the developers have added a claustrophobic feeling by giving some areas a limited amount of air so you have to run through to activate the air circulation system. Controls are your typical Resident Evil style which is you pull the Right shoulder button to draw your gun, your d-pad to aim and then a button to shoot. Along your journey of the submarine, you will need to find objects such as keycards to unlock doors and better weapons.Show more

I actually played this on Saturn and, while it has some ugly cutscenes and GOD AWFUL voice acting (one character is SUPER gay for no reason beyond he's the designer of the Big Top), I actually loved this. It's one of the only games where you can aim and run, it's got a good story, some of the deaths are genuinely shocking because, holy hell, it's like if they killed off Sherry in RE2, it's just such a complete change from how we normally view NPCs in horror (those who die and those who obviously won't). But I liked this. Genuinely, for all the stupid voice acting and CGI, I genuinely, unironically, loved this game to the point I can still remember all of it. It never really got a grand entrance into the gaming world and faded away instantly (apparently spiritually lived on by the equally as forgotten PS2 game Extermination), but it's a great game and I really, really wish more people got to experience both the good and bad of it.

This is a rare classical survival horror from the Sega Saturn, with pre-rendered backgrounds and fixed camera angles. I vowed to play each of those games, and began to run it with an emulator. Unfortunately, Saturn emulation is still very tricky to this day, and unless you find a Saturn console, it's become rather impossible to play this game under good conditions.

Silent Hill
Silent HillSilent Hill is the first installment in the Silent Hill series of psychological survival horror video games. Unlike earlier survival horror games that focused on protagonists with combat training, the main character Harry Mason is an average man. The gameplay consists of combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving. The controller vibration is used to indicate Harry's heartbeat and will vibrate on low health. The player must regularly enter an inventory screen to check Harry's health, use items, and equip different weapons.

Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon
Zelda: The Wand of GamelonZelda: The Wand of Gamelon was the product of a compromise between Nintendo and Philips following their failure to release a CD-ROM based add-on to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was developed in tandem with Link: The Faces of Evil and marks the first game where the eponymous princess Zelda is playable. The Wand of Gamelon differ from most conventional Zelda games as it is a platformer with a side-scrolling view, similar to The Adventure of Link. Stages are accessed from a world map, with more becoming available as Zelda clears an area or defeats a boss. The game have been subject to much criticism and Nintendo does not recognize it as part of the series.

Martian Gothic: Unification
Martian Gothic: UnificationMartian Gothic : Unification is one of the numerous titles which came out at the end of the PlayStation lifespan. At first glance, it looks like a typical Resident Evil rip-off with a futuristic paint, a disturbing cover and bad voice-acting. Of course, the game ended up selling very poorly. But it's so much more than that. Incidentally, it is also Creative Reality's last game. Sharing the same team and the same writer than Dreamweb, it comes as no surprise that the game heavily relies on writing and puzzles. This reliance (and a few more things) makes Martian Gothic: Unification a title to look back at.

Gauntlet II
Gauntlet IIThe gameplay is very similar to the original Gauntlet, a topdown dungeon crawl supporting up to four players. The biggest difference from the original game is that players can choose identical classes, instead of being limited to a particular one for each joystick; each player is differentiated by color. Thus, instead of having a "warrior", "wizard", and "valkyrie" (for instance), in Gauntlet II there could be a "red wizard", a "blue elf" and a "green warrior". In addition to the new "class" system, new level designs were added, including the possibility of encountering them in altered ways by having the play-field turned in steps of 90°. Other new features included the enemy "It", which upon contact would make a player "It" and draw all enemies towards him/her. The only way to release this curse is by touching another player or entering the exit, turning any level containing "It" into a fantasy filled game of tag. Other notable additions include the ability to ricochet shots off walls by means of a special pick-up, acid puddles that caused large, predetermined amounts of damage and a large dragon which would occupy multiple squares and require multiple hits to destroy. New level elements were also added, adding more variety to the original game. These included "all walls are invisible", "magic walls" which changed into monsters or items when hit, "stun tiles" which stunned the player, and fake exits. Another challenge in the game is the possibility to find a "secret room". This can be found by completing specific achievements within the level (e.g., "don't be fooled", means that you must find the real exit first). The secret room contains items such as food and magic potions (extra shot power, extra shot speed, extra magic power, extra speed, extra armor and extra fight power). This sequel was also the first to feature what is now known as the Gauntlet theme tune, which resembles a simplified Baroque fugue.
