Castle Master

Castle Master (1990)

by Incentive Software, Domark Software, The Hit Squad
Genres:Adventure, Puzzle, Arcade
Themes:Action
Game modes:Single player
Story:Initially the player chooses between playing as the prince or princess. The character not chosen is then taken away by a dragon to Castle Eternity. (The location of keys and some other items differ slightly between the two characters.) The game requires the player, through a first person view, to explore Castle Eternity. There are riddles on many of the castle walls, which give gameplay hints. There are also keys and pentacles hidden in various locations for the player to collect. Many rooms contain spirits which attack the player and reduce his or her health. The player's health (represented by a barbell where weights indicate the amount) is also the player's strength which is important for some puzzles. The player's only weapon is an unlimited supply of rocks to throw, but a single hit is sufficient to exorcise most of the spirits. The ultimate goal is to kill the boss spirit Magister (who can only be killed when all other spirits in the castle are destroyed) and thereby rescue the character's opposite number. There are no lives for the player; if health is reduced to nothing the game is restarted from the beginning unless the player loads a saved game. The game was ranked the 39th best game for the Commodore Amiga in Issue 0 of Amiga Power (May 1991). It did not feature in any further Top 100 listings. A budget re-release was reviewed by Linda Barker in Issue 17 (September 1992) receiving a 70% scoreShow more

Biblinthus
BiblinthusSet in the great celestial library with an adorable art style, Yonda the wise librarian is the only one able to seek out the bored Great Ones who decided to abandon the needs of this universe. At first glance, Biblinthus plays just like Tetris, where the player drops pieces of floor tiles around Yonda while rotating the screen to help said pieces fit together. The primary objective is to fill up Yonda's silver key by expanding the map, collecting various items, and advance to the next stage. Don't be deceived by thinking Biblinthus is just a cute puzzle/dungeon crawler with Tetris mechanics. As a finely polished puzzle, the endless possibilities of Biblinthus bring out the best of each player's patience, strategy, and imagination!

Boppin'
Boppin'Sweety Hunnybunz, the Singing Treacle Bear, has captured all the monsters of all video games everywhere and imprisoned them in patterns throughout his multiverse. With no monsters to fight, the heroes of these games are out of a job! But Yeet and Boik (with your help) can save the day! Each of the 150 worlds in the Hunnybunz multiverse is a new puzzle with elevators, multi-directional gravity and many different prizes. In the final battle you face sweety Hunnybunz himself, but, beware, for this treacle bear is no piece of cake! Boppin is a one or two player game, complete with a full featured, user friendly world/level editor to expand the game beyond your wildest dreams. Over 2,500 tile images are supplied, but not all are used in the supplied worlds, so truly new puzzles can be created.

Bubble Bobble
Bubble BobbleIn the game, each player controls one of the two Bubble Dragons, Bub and Bob. The player can move along platforms, as well as jump to those above and to the side, similar to most platform games. The player can also blow bubbles. These can trap enemies, who are defeated if the bubble is then burst by the player's spiny back. Bubbles that contain enemies can be popped at the same time resulting in different foods being projected around the level. Each enemy trapped in a bubble equates to a different food. Food is consumed and transferred to points (an increasing scale of 1000 points is awarded for each enemy burst in tandem with another meaning: one enemy burst equals one food item worth 1000 points, two enemies burst equals two food items worth 1000 and 2000 points, three enemies burst equals three food items worth 1000, 2000 and 4000 points, and so on), which results in earning lives. These same bubbles also float for a time before bursting, and can be jumped on, allowing access to otherwise inaccessible areas. Players progress to the next level once all enemies on the current level are defeated. Enemies turn "angry" — becoming pink-colored and moving faster — if they are the last enemy remaining, escape from a bubble after being left too long or a certain amount of time has been spent on the current level. A monster will also become angry if either player collects a skull (the only negative item in the game), and the monster is hit by the resulting comet crossing the screen (however, this is a rare occurrence). After a further time limit expires, an additional invincible enemy appears for each player, actively chasing them using only vertical and horizontal movements. These do not need to be defeated to complete the level, and disappear once a player's life is lost. Contact with enemies and their projectiles (rocks, lasers, fireballs, etc.) results in death.

Virtual Bart
Virtual BartBart's reality goes virtual when he is strapped into Martin Prince's Virtual Reality experiment at the elementary school science fair. Each virtual reality program represents a stage in the game that Bart must play through in order to escape the machine before the programs crash. The game consists of three side-scrolling platform stages and three stages that take place from a rear view. Bart assumes the roles of a pig, dinosaur, and baby for the platform stages. He tosses tomatoes and eggs, slides down a water slide, and drives a motorcycle in a post-apocalyptic Springfield for the three remaining stages. They are all accessed by chance via a wheel-of-misfortune.

Hellnight
HellnightHellnight (Dark Messiah in Japan) is a survival horror game at heart, although it has no combat gameplay. Controlling the nameless hero, the player must travel through the underground and protect Naomi. There is only one monster in the whole game, the "creature" itself, which is invulnerable and cannot be killed. Instead players are constantly on the run from it, making sure it does not catch them. The game is divided into large maze-like levels, each one usually populated by the creature who keeps pursuing the player (although he does change form after each level). At certain points there will be companions who can attack the monster and temporarily stun him. There are also people to talk to in the underground world, items to pick up, and puzzles to solve.
