The battle system is what differentiates Bravely Default from other RPGs. Here players can strategically choose when to initiate two complementary commands: Brave and Default. This innovative system encourages players to think carefully about strategy during every enemy encounter. One of the first RPGs I got for the 3DS and it remains one of my favorite RPGs of all time with its Final Fantasy Tactics-esque Job system and engrossing story. With the shut down of the 3DS shop in March 2023 and the lack of a online release (as of February 2025), the only way to play this and its sequel Bravely Second: End Layer is buying it secondhand or through emulation. This makes this game in danger of being lost to time and I would find that a major loss for RPG enjoyers everywhere. I genuinely think everyone should play this game at least once.

The game is set in the same universe as NieR, a spin-off of the Drakengard series, and takes place several thousand years after the events of that game.
