Non-owners of a game shouldn't be allowed to rate and review it

Often you can see one star ratings shortly after a release, one liner reviews with partly political messages or other nonsensical complaints. Multiple reviews reveal that the corresponding user hasn't even played the game.

Both features gets abused like crazy. Both need to be entirely removed.

Only owners of a game should be able to rate and review it.

Maybe owner rating and overall rating should just be two different numbers, with owner rating being the main one?
Ratings on GOG already have much less reviews than on Steam, and getting rid of a huge portion of reviews will just make them even less reliable. But separating them into two could be the best of both options.

"owners of a game should be able to rate and review it.". They can know the game from someplace else and will, maybe, decide to buy here to.

@ Vainamoinen
I know my suggestion wouldn't solve the problem entirely, but it would be a step in the right direction, at least when it comes to the overall user ratings. Since I don't think there's a perfect solution to this, I tried to come up with something that would address as many of the main concerns as possible, but primarily with regards to the user ratings and not locking out owners on other platforms. I see those as the biggest concerns, and even after a few days of thinking about it I haven't come up with anything better than what I already stated. ;)

As a user, I generally don't pay any attention to one star ratings unless the person leaving them gives specific reasons for the rating. I also give more weight to reviews from verified owners of an item, particularly someplace like Amazon.

@s1drano
My suggestion earlier addresses the issue of refunded owners. I would still have their reviews counted in the average rating. It would still be possible to abuse the system, but it would cut down on trolls review-bombing at least somewhat, because in my experience a lot of trolls wouldn't have the patience to go through the whole buy and refund process on a game just to leave a bad review. They tend to be more about instant gratification.

I agree with the sentiment, but it's hard to prove someone hasn't owned the same game on another platform. There's also the potential for loophole abuse. With refunds being as popular as they are now, there's nothing to stop people from buying a game, leaving a fake review, and then asking for a refund. And it's not like we can invalidate those reviews either. It's perfectly legitimate for a user to leave a negative review like "this game is just an asset flip" and then ask for a refund.

@toroca An interesting idea, definitely. If non owner reviews simply didn't have any effect on the overall rating, filters or no, liars wouldn't get such a damn boner over their own power. Still, review bombing works through the sheer number of negative reviews, not through mean star ratings. If I were a game developer seeing my labor of love drowned in dishonest reviews, I'd jump ship regardless of the overall star rating. I do hear the many complaints of people who own games on Steam and want to offer their honest opinion here, and I understand these people. I still value their opinion, but measures against the anti empathy cult now take precedence.

I swear every time I read the negative IQ "but muh free speech" non-argument on this wish I start suffering gradual brain rot. Sweeties, no one is stifling your freedom of free speech in your review. Own the game and say what you want.

Anyway. GOG's review system in its current state is such a joke that if there isn't a wave of non-owner gestapo trying to censure games like Dustborn, then it's off to reviewshill games like Dino Crisis and Alpha Protocol. AP's pre-release shilling here was especially egregious, considering how much of a technical disaster the Steam version was. Funny how unreleased game at the time was sitting at a 4.5/5 rating. Lol! The review system needs a major revamp and this is just one option for quality control. End of story.

I have done several reviews of games on own on Steam and not here, usually to warn people not to buy them. If they were great games, then I probably wanted a DRM free version on bought them here.

The point is, careful what you wish for. Usually if someone doesn't own something here, there is a reason.

I disagree. Anyone should be able to post a review, after all they may own that game on Steam or another platform, or they may have owned it in physical media (CD, DVD, etc).

Instead, I think that the default public review rating shouldn't be affected by non-owner reviews scores, and that by default non-owner reviews should be hidden, with an option to un-hide the reviews and to un-hide the combined game owner and non-game owner review score.

The answer to speech you disagree with isn't censorship. The answer to bad speech is more speech. However, being able to separate signal from noise certainly does help.

Also, a graph indicating review scores over time can help folks identify if there's ongoing review score sabotage/protest going on, or if it may be backlash from a bad/greedy corporate decision (like monetizing a single player game with microtransactions).

Might even be a good idea to let the community vote on trusted content curators who tastes line up with their own. As a way to both discover new content they enjoy, but also to get review scores that align more closely with their opinions. And adding that as an additional review category would be awesome. Let users select their trusted content curators, then let those content curators generate a personalized trusted curator review score for you. The choice in which content curators you follow makes the score change. So it's not some shady snobby elites, or some Redditor groupthinkers. It's the customer who selects who they place their trust in, and when they revoke that trust.

No. Just use the filter and let everyone choose what reviews they want to read and find useful. Stop trying to force your choices on everyone. There's plenty of worthless reviews by verified owners too, often far worse than the non-owner ones.

Wis we could edit comments here... Right after I hit "Post it" I realized I left out one thing I wanted to include in my comments: refunded owners. I would say their reviews should still count toward the average user rating; I would suspect somewhere in GOG's system there's still a record that you at one time owned their version of the game, even if you no longer do.

I can see both sides of this issue, and I have a possible solution that might appease most (but of course not all) people.

Rather than block people from reviewing a game if they don't own the GOG version and therefore stifling the free expression of opinions, I would suggest leaving the review system open to everyone, but in the average user rating, only include people who own GOG's version, as they are verified owners. This would let people who have played a game in the past leave a review with their thoughts, but their score would not affect the overall user rating.

This makes sense to me because if someone has played a game in the past or on another platform, it's obviously not identical to GOG's version, and it is entirely possible that things they hated are fixed in the current version. The reverse is also possible; the GOG version might in fact be worse than a version from a CD or another platform.

For the latter case, I can cite myself: I own the CD version of Civilization III, and at one time I considered buying the GOG version to get rid of the CD requirement. Then I read reviews and found out that the GOG version has some issues I wasn't interested in dealing with. Similarly, SimCity 2000 as hosted here is an inferior version of the game.

Leaving non-GOG owners out of the average rating would prevent the issue Vainamoinen cited a couple of days ago, of popular games being review-bombed to a lower rating here than on other platforms.

To me, this strikes a middle ground between Steam's limitation of only owner reviews and the free-for-all that GOG currently suffers.

No, for multiple reasons. People may have played a game elsewhere, and should be able to review the game they played elsewhere. Maybe someone played the game in the past, but wants to share their experience and recommendation through their preferred storefront (IE GOG). This is actually a big problem with other platforms (Steam, etc.), just because someone doesn't own the game on that platform doesn't mean they should be locked out from reviewing it. This is a bad suggestion, and it's bad for consumer rights to lock people out of reviews just because they don't own a copy of the game on this platform, or currently own a copy. Maybe it would be better to flag reviews from accounts that don't own a copy here, so people can see whether the reviewer owns a copy of the game or not. Reviewers can then also make their reviews in accordance with this 'flag' system, if they so choose.

A bit of an overblown reaction. There's plenty of people who have games in other formats who review here (I myself have done that for "Castlevana & Contra," which I based on the original CD release). The problem is that there are people who don't read the rules, and it doesn't matter if they own the game on GOG or not. The REAL issue is that more people need to report "reviews" that aren't focused on the game itself. As others have mentioned, limiting to owners won't stop the review-bombing and political nonsense.

Lots of games that have above 95% approval rating on Steam are review bombed below the two star mark over here. It's not in GOG's "best interest" at all to let dishonest pricks judge games they've never played. Their business clients have already started to jump ship in droves.

Problem not mentioned before.
You give back a game on GoG, you are not a "owner" anymore.
Not allowed to review a game that was bad enough to refund it?
Sounds like a great idea - for the one who wants to sell the game because only good reviews will stay.
And with GoG being at best 10% of the marked, with games released on various sources and GoG often enough a few month behind, it is good to hear out owners from other stores, if they want to share their opinion.

Not to speak about "old games" we still got from time to time. Games I got on disk like 30 years ago.
I am not allowed to review those games then?

People should be able to rate and review the game without owning. Anyone can go to metacritic and rate/review anything without proving ownership. Review bombing is not an argument. Also it's not in the GOG.com best interest, as the majority of GOG users are using Steam and/or other platform where they already own the game and want to do a review for gog.

"pOLitiCaL aGenDas" for me but not for thee. I couldn't think of a single major conservative-leaning game (except Super 3D Noah's Ark, if that even counts, being more of a historical curiosity for Wolfenstein fans and religious players) while there's plenty of hard left-leaning trash that expresses contempt for anybody who doesn't fall into line with their increasing extreme views.

And while such games may be littered with low ratings, they are also far more likely to attract 5 star ratings by those keen to endorse such views. Ultimately it's up to the power of the people to exercise judgement when making purchasing decisions (and fortunately, we are able to provide feedback on whether reviews have been helpful/constructive).

If a game is filled with ideological rot, then it's a good thing that reviewers are pointing this out for those who do not wish to support it. In any case, reviews ought to say something more constructive instead of merely parroting "woke bad" talking points without elaborating on why somebody may wish to steer clear of such a game.

And with many GOG releases being available via other platforms, it would also be a disservice to deprive people from leaving reviews who may have played the games elsewhere. For example, I've left reviews on games that I already own for PC/Switch that I may not have necessarily purchased via GOG, precisely 0% of which have made any mention of a game's ideological/political agenda.

Asking for something like this is the same as cutting out the freedom of post and comment anything, independently of having or not a game. in a perfecft world, one should be able to rate the game on another platform as the game is the same. but this wont work with spamming bots. also, there might be an issue with the particular version gog features, ie a game might be great but the version on gog might lack something as an example.

Clearly it's not a "free speech issue" whether you get to lie about and defame an entertainment product at the point of sale. The issue is, again, with the honesty and integrity of the reviewers. Before the postfactual era, I never would have doubted whether a reviewer has actually played the game. Now they're outright lying to their fellow gamers just to push their political agenda. It is their responsibility and fault that reviews without proof of purchase should not be possible on GOG. This was a functional system before the waves of hate and ignorance. They've not just broken the system, they've repurposed it. This is sucking the life out of video game culture. It's become stale, grey and hostile. After the last indie is bankrupt or bought, they might come to understand that the AAA industry is plainly bullshit.

I +1 this for the simple fact that the reviews for Dustborn are further proof that reviews are overdue for a change. I have a lot of games on Steam that I don't on GOG and I theoretically should be able to review them, but where's the actual proof I have AND played it? Oh yeah, for all we know you could have pirated it. More importantly, as the reviews for Dustborn show, the people reviewing it have never played it to begin with. Dustborn is on a hit list over on Steam because racist chuds hate non-white, non-male and non-straight people, and are on a mission to drag it down for it. You can see the effects of this in real time, on the game's GOG store page.

As someone who has actually played Dustborn, does the game have absolutely cringey moments and dialogue? Oh yeah. Are the characters unlikable? Mostly.. though Theo, O, and Eli are fine. Once you get past all the cringe, the actual game's mechanics are.. alright. The very definition of mid. A better question is, do YOU even know what the mechanics are? Or did you watch video or read stuff online so you can pretend you did?

Of course, 95% of people reading the reviews couldn't tell you because they never played the game. That much is painfully obvious. It's just another way to show off your -isms, a growing problem on GOG. Complain and cry about censorship all you want if non-owner reviews get removed but this game is effectively censored by review bombers anyway. The irony.

Maybe allow connecting (signing-in) to Steam to confirm a purchase for something *solely* to allow posting reviews?

...Sounds a bit "difficult", I guess?
Otherwise, yeah, this should not really be a thing!...

*GOG decides*...

Maybe it's allowed because they actually need more reviews and ratings. This is GOG, this isn't Steam with its huge customer base. If you've only got 2 reviews for a title, it's kind of useless for the customer.

if someone owns a game sold by GOG, doesn't mean someone hasn't got the title on Epic like I do Alien Isolation, yet I got Alien Isolation here on GOG because of DRM lifting

Maybe one-star ratings of game license owners indicate how dissatisfied they are with the game and couldn't be bothered to by a bad title twice just to be able to rate it.

The disruptive opinion can not be ignored, psychology tells us, it can not be filtered out, neither by mind nor algorithm. And when it's an opinion by people who go on second or third hand info or just draw it out of their behind, it has no place on the point of sale. Even Gabe Newell knows that, the dude with the monopoly who doesn't have to give a shit about his business clients. For GOG, it's clearly a life or death matter.

Nobody who posts reviews here directly reads the EULA, of course. That guy on youtube on whose behalf people act like jerks here, that guy might have read the EULA. Not thoroughly of course, leaves more time for fabricating outrage and getting clicks.

The people who eventually end up badmouthing a game on the point of sale at GOG have not read the EULA, they're just following implicit orders from their social media expert on the matter. They are making themselves willing satellites of an outrage machinery that could well be interpreted as a collective act of censorship itself.

They're mindless NPC drones without an opinion of their own, able only to reproduce the argument of some social media jackass.

So, in short, whenever somebody intends to "warn" you of the terms of contract of or 'censorship' in a game they have never played, they're dishonest actors regurgitating the hot internet garbage they've been fed with who should doubly and triply not get to write reviews on GOG.

And as this BS is against the explicitly stated GOG rules for reviews, well ... these people need to get a life.

Hard disagree. Allowing all people to review gives more info, that's always a good thing.

For example, someone may have read the EULA of the game and found something bad they want to review. I see this all the time in reviews well liked in GoG, where DRM is important and some games are not fully DRM sometimes.

I could see more filter options to feature more owner reviews, but censorship should not be the way.

Even political messages can make people buy games.

J_chuklz is 100% right. At the end of the day...the request boils down to shutting people up because you don't like what they say. Use the filters, and quit trying to dictate others' actions. The logical conclusions that Vainamoinen arrives at have neither logic nor a conclusion. It's irrelevant what a group of verified GOG purchasers say in unison or what they rate something jointly. There is a group/echo chamber mentality here that prevades everything. Leave people alone and let them speak.

Part of the problem is thinking that people who bought the game won't just rate it 5-Stars also for political reasons or because of their investment.

I mean, just look at the ratings for any title. There are a ton of 5-Star ratings for sub-par games. How do you suggest we correct that so that games aren't being over hyped and people getting duped? You aren't ever going to get an honest review system, because people aren't honest.

I like having the option to see what people are saying, even if their review is based on a walkthrough or Let's Play. Then I am being made aware of content that a strong supporter isn't relaying or omitiing on purpose.

Use the filters. They are your friend. The current system is the middle ground. It allows both the bloviating positivity and the negativity, giving the customer the knowledge they need to make a good purchasing decision. After all, reviews are there to relay information to the customer spending the money, not to help sell more games.

Hey, let's not devolve into insults. There's more than enough of that on the forums. ;)

My answer to "how do you know they don't own it or haven't played it on a different platform" is, frankly, I don't. When the legit GOG owners rate a game a mean 4.7 stars (excellent) and the other reviews and ratings drag that score down to an 'overall' of merely 1.8 stars (abysmal), it is the only logical conclusion though.

The solution proposed here is fair, and it puts honesty above all other concerns. I have gripes with games I never played too of course, but you won't find my 'review' under Kingdom Come or some visual novels glorifying the sexualisation of minors. I won't review a game I never played. I'd be ashamed of myself misleading people like that.

For the non players, there are other places on the net to vent their concern besides the actual point of sale.

And how do you know they don't own it or haven't played it on a different platform? You post is very simpleminded.
Furthermore, even if they haven't played the entire game, they may have seen something they felt strongly about,
You don't have the right to say who can and who can't have an opinion.

I think this is a bogus request. How would you know whether a person played the game on another platform or not? You wouldn't. There are also playthroughs that people can wacth. This is merely an attempt by people who don't like what others say or think to silence others as though they were the defenders of truth.

I agree.. if you don't own a game you should have no-say in a review, i own an absolute tone of games (not all PC) and some are just a janky mess with less worth than toilet paper..... however i feel like if i don't or have not owned it via GOG i should not leave a review as a game can be very different depending on the device you have it for or where you got it from.

check Hogs Of War for example if you disagree... that game was EPIC on PS1, here on GOG (PC) its a steaming pile of shite where AI fails, the textures fail to load and the music/sound glitch out.. so if i was to review the PS1 version i would say its Awesome 8/10 but the PC version is totally different and i would give it a 1/10 as nothing works.

I also think that paid reviews should be removed as there biased a lot of the time which influences a buyers choice and a game is not always as portrayed by the person who got paid.

I just stick to reviewing games i have actually had or got on GOG as i think that's fairer than just my opinion on a copy i have else where.

There's already filter that lets you only see reviews from people who have the game on GOG, and you can also see the average ratings of only GOG owners of a title. There's literally no need for this.

The ONLY reason you should to be able to rate a game without owning it is if you own it on another platform, but the negatives of spammers and false reviews way outweigh this one positive.

I think the biggest problem is that GOG does nothing about reported reviews, but I think there should be an option to filter out reviews by non-owners both from the average rating and from the reviews page, unless you explicitly chose to view all.
